August 8th - August 14th, 2008
This week,
Rihanna fails to spend a second consecutive week at #1 as a re-surgent
Katy Perry and a hot on her heels
Coldplay is making time at the top for
Disturbia extremely difficult. Despite the fact that all three of the songs have now spent time at #1, each one is very much in the running for the top spot in the next few weeks - which is an exceptional indicator of how dominant these three tracks have been all summer. And speaking of how dominant they've been, its hardly given way for any new song to become a force, as yet another new week goes by without a new bulleted song entering the top 5. Although,
Death Cab For Cutie do come in, un-bulleted at #5, making it their second best showing behind
Soul Meets Body, which hit #1 for 3 weeks in 2005.
But that might not be the case for long, as the ever-growing
Alicia Keys continues to gain steam and pushes to be the little hit that could.
OneRepublic are looking for their third consecutive shot at top 5 glory, but rock heavyweights
Theory Of A Deadman,
Staind, and
Mobile could make that extremely difficult. Down on the lower rungs of the chart, the biggest gainers would have to be
Lady GaGa,
Nas/Keri Hilson, and
Puddle of Mudd.
As more and more songs continue to fizzle out before they hit the top 5, and even the top 10, three more songs make it on board this week trying to buck the trend and steal some thunder from the mighty three leading the way these past few weeks. First up, a haunting duet from
Apocalyptica f/ Adam Grontier, which could do very well. Been on the bubblin' under for a while now,
Wintersleep, with their fantastic track
Oblivion. And last but not least, the belated follow-up to
Bleeding Love as
Leona Lewis finally returns to the chart. After having a remarkable 9-week run at #1 earlier this year, it would be a huge shame for her follow-up single to flop, and that looked quite possible a few months ago. But the song has grown on me, and top 10 shouldn't be out of sight for
Better In Time.
