I don't see why they felt it was necessary to compare Rihanna to artists that she doesn't even share the same genere with. Mary J. Blige is Hip Hop/R&B, Bey switches back and forth between R&B/Pop, Ciara is R&B/Urban and Aaliyah had a multiple genre range. Rihanna is for the most part, a POP artist. The only reason they compared her to those ladies is because they're black. Sometimes we have to really dissect things, meaning we have to analyze comparisons and patterns in those statements.

Why not compare her to Britney, Christina, Jessica, Janet or even Whitney? Those artists for the most part are pure Pop artists. ( I know some will argue otherwise for Janet, but I think she's a Pop star through and through).

She's an rnb artist who crossed over to pop. Janet's music lies heavily in rnb..but since she's pretty much done it all, she is widely considered a pop legend and icon.

My point is that Rihanna's image is arguably one of the most popular aspects of her career. She is easily recognizable.

Her style is fierce BUT you dont see designers knocking her door down.

The BIGGEST problem with Rihanna is the "puppet" shtick. Because everyone sees her as a label puppet NOTHING she does comes off as original or her "idea".

I think that's why Twitter has actually helped her a lot. People have been able to honestly get a glimpse of her personality. Some of my friends have become members of the Navy strictly off her tweets!

Rihanna is a POP Icon. Whether you agree or not. She tied Whitney Houston in #1 hits. She tied Madonna in WW #1 hits. She praised by Bjork, Sade, Bon Jovi, Slash, Mary J Blige, and U2. She's worked with Bono, Eminem, Britney Spears, Slash and Coldplay. At 19 she tied Whitney Houston's Biggest Hit. She has 5 grammys. She's a fashion icon. She's has cultural impact. She broke the record for the most sold out shows in the O2 by any female artist. All before turning 24. Unlike the other girls Rihanna has time. If she was such a non-factor people wouldn't be buying her albums and she wouldn't be sell out shows WW.

I mean, sometimes I just don't understand ATRL. They praise Adele's success for being solely based on her music and talent, and soon enough add her to their "trinity". But then again, I thought Rihanna is only popular because of her hits, and got nothing to offer outside of her hits. What Adele has to offer but her excellent music and talent? What does Adele have outside of her music?

Exactly.

I think that is the thing people are arguing about. Nobody can lie she has mad massive music success since pon de replay, but she is still overshadowed by Gaga or Beyonce even though Rihanna has had more #1's than them

Britney would come to mind, but she failed to do Latin and alternative (though I know some stans would argue she has done certify alternative music...I say no).

The problem with Rihanna is that she doesn't have an easily identifiable image, which is part of the reason why I don't believe she's iconic, or an icon for that matter. The only thing I will say that's really signature about is her voice, it is unique.
