The Britney lack of promotion debate compared to GaGa/Perry has been mentioned in the past few posts. It does make a difference.
GaGa also uses alot of dark religious symbolism, and it seems that many people don't like that. It does differ alot from the image her original fanbase fell in love with. I think many fans feel isolated from her now.
No, it's not a contradiction. The difference is that those songs are inspirational/uplifting. It's a different type of 'serious', if we use that term. It's like seeing the light, the bright side of things compared to the dark, militaristic/religious serious that we were talking about earlier. If you want a newer example, since you complained about that too, then use 'What the Hell'. Similar message.
And Adele isn't as big with the same age group as the previously mentioned artists. I'd say she's more Adult Contemporary with crossover potential. She's still bigger in the UK than she is here. And once again, her type of 'serious' is about connecting with people in their emotions/situations compared to the dark, theatrical stuff the others are doing. That just isolates the masses.

You didn't need to color code it, I can follow arguments.
Alright. I agree Britney has not been promoting much. But when has she? (In recent times)
I doubt that. If in fact they are being isolated, there are plenty more that will take their spots. She's been using dark religious imagery prominently since The Fame Mons†er. That is how it was printed on the album cover. Also, Katy has used similar imagery in photoshoots, etc.
But did What the Hell do well? No. And it is a contradiction, I fail to see how ****in' Perfect is a humourous, happy-go-lucky kind of song. It makes you think, that to me is a serious song.
Moving on to Adele. I am going to use cold hard logic to tackle this. Rolling In The Deep was released in November, it began getting plays on mostly adult channels. The general audience for that is older people, not the average pop listener. At that point in time Rolling In The Deep was probably in the Top 40 or so on iTunes. Now, come April, Rolling In The Deep gets played on pop channels, where the listener is the average pop listener. Rolling In The Deep skyrockets on iTunes, and becomes the number one song. It is clear who pushed Rolling In The Deep to number one on the Hot 100. Ok, she isn't as big in America as in the U.K. But, she's the most successful artist of the year so far. And the only other people who could end up overshadowing her are Beyoncé or GaGa.
