Okay so out of interest I did some research.

It turns out that the dog would likely be able to survive under water longer than a human, if it has experience in water.

Babies, especially newborns have the natural instinct (similar to marine origins) to naturally hold their breath.

Theoretically, me jumping in, saving the child, then jumping in for my dog was the best option as the dog would survive also.

Right, you never know until the situation presents itself. It makes logical sense to save a human as humans contribute to society, but I understand the emotional connection of saving ones pet.
