NME: With the cast of brilliant minds involved, we’re largely disappointed that ‘4’ places the emphasis on middle of the road balladry instead of the strange-pop she can do so well.

Disappointed with The Guardian's review but hopefully The Rolling Stone will be more positive!

NOW MAGAZINE - Beyoncé "4" Album Review:
DISC REVIEW
Beyoncé - 4
(Columbia) BY KEVIN RITCHIE
Beyoncé has maintained a certain distance from her fans. She’s largely avoided social media and adopted the Sasha Fierce persona as an excuse to act aggro onstage. On 4, she’s still missing a real sense of vulnerability but steps out from behind the club jams with beautifully nuanced mid-tempo production.
Slow-burning opener 1+1 is an instant classic, melding soul orchestration and a looping guitar line that allow her to wring maximum emotion from her ambitious phrasing. There’s nothing predictable about her fluttering, grandiose vibrato, and her confrontational vocals are offset by subtle flourishes: the minimal beat on I Miss You, Start Over’s gleaming synths, producer Kanye West’s playful nod to 90s R&B on Party, and the bonkers, Boyz II Men-sampling Countdown.
The track list finally falters with a flat, Diane Warren-penned ballad and the simplistic, Major Lazer redux Run The World (Girls), both of which seem cynically tacked on at the end to ensure radio play.
RATING: 3/5
Top track: 1+1

I just read them down yesterday so **** them. The fact that they rated B'Day and IASF both 2 stars and made them equivalent is enough to see they know no **** about her type of music. And then they said '4' has no vulnerability? BITCH BYE!

Ive said it once and Ill say it again. People are JEALOUS of Beyonce and always will be, they hate her so much and are so afraid to admit it straight out that they find any small reason to nitpick at her from behind the scenes. The fact he started off an album review with how much money she made on a Forbes list proves this to be true. And while most people think im reaching or cant see it, Ive been stanning long enough to know when someone is letting their personal judgement on her personality, life, and attitude come into play when they are criticizing her work. People dont like a powerful black woman dominating an entire industry from music to film and etc... They want to break her down piece by piece just like they did Michael and watch her do crazy, embarrassing things until she just disappears.
BUT IT AINT HAPPENING!

Beyonce Knowles' '4' Has Exactly That Many Worthwhile Tracks
Beyonce's '4' has four hit-worthy tracks, three passably good ones, and five that shouldn't have seen the light of day. In short: This album is as much of a non-sensical mess as the cover art would lead one to believe.
The cringe-worthy opener "1+1" is a dated attempt at balladry gone awry, complete with an '80s style guitar back-up. Including it on the album at all, much less as the first track, is a baffling decision. Equally ridiculous would be to follow it with a barely better ballad, followed by a worse ballad. This is exactly what the producers have done. Not until the fourth track "Best Thing I Never Had" does '4' begin to experience life.
Naturally, it is short-lived. Before the audience knows it, they are left wallowing in what may be the most grating slow-jam in recent history: "Rather Die Young." Listeners would likely prefer to die now to avoid another second of battling their eardrums to survive the dismal track.
Shortly after, without a hint of explanation, Beyonce delivers one of the best songs of her entire career, a mid-tempo number called"Love on Top," subtly reminiscent of a chilled out "Best of My Love" (The Emotions). The track is an instant classic, a complete win in every regard. The sunny production and soulful delivery harken back to a less cynical state of R&B. To include it among the drivel on '4' is an insult.
What follows is a superior, yet still puzzling, final act. The pleasant island jam "Countdown" is bookended to essentially a much better version of the same song titled "End of Time." The latter is a perfect summer smash, complete with insistent percussion and throbbing trumpets. So rather than keeping the spirit alive by segueing into the electro-heavy "Run the Word," the action is stopped dead in its tracks by yet another dismal ballad.
Some artists make a career out of balladry. Celine Dion, Dolly Parton, Barbara Streisand, and Whitney Houston are just a few that have left indelible impacts on pop culture through stellar and heartfelt songs of human experience. Beyonce thinks she's among these women, but really isn't. Her Superwoman-style persona is so steely and devoid of human vulnerability that listening to her mediocre ballads is made an exhausting chore. She projects rather than feels, begging the audience to feel at her command.
The result of all the grandstanding is a misfire of a Beyonce album with a handful of hits that should have been released in EP form.
Rating: C
