Alexander Payne's awards contender The Descendants, starring George Clooney, made headlines in placing No. 10 for the weekend, even though it was only playing in 29 theaters in 11 top markets. The Fox Searchlight film grossed $1.2 million for a massive per location average of $41,379. The movie's cume (it opened last Wednesday in five locations) is $1.3 million.
"To break into the top 10 and beat films that are playing in thousands of theaters is an amazing accomplishment," Fox Searchlight vice president of distribution Sheila DeLoach said. "It's great counterprogramming for adults."
The Descendant's strong performance out of the gate is reminiscent of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which became a crossover hit.
I'm so excited to see this next week. Alexander Payne has yet to disappoint, even if he's not very prolific.
Breaking Dawn was a great film and Kristen Stewarts acting has improved quite a lot. Before I thought she was a decent actress but she's great in this film. Glad to see Breaking Dawn snatching wigs. I hope the same thing happens when the DVD is released.
The production budget ($110M) has really soared since the first Twilight ($37M)..
I noticed this when I was looking on BOM.
I don't understand how this movies budget ended up being so high compared to the others in the series.
Judging by the trailer, it looks like the same old stuff.

The first Twilight looked like it was shot on a camcorder so I can see why the budget would go up from there.
I enjoyed the film, but the Harry Potter films spanned an entire decade (2001-2011). The finale was the biggest movie event of 2011. While it will do well, I don't think Breaking Dawn Pt. 2 will beat Potter's record.

I'm sure all the principals' fees were bumped up significantly.
