"Diggin' On You" (1995) CrazySexyCool
Hot 100 Peak: #5
Overall score: 8.65 High score: 10 (5x)/Low score: 6 (1x)
The final single off the massive CrazySexCool (and the album's fourth consecutive top five hit), "Diggin' On You" is a midtempo R&B jam so seductively smooth that it feels like musical sex. Voters clearly felt the groove—all except three awarded it an 8 or higher—but it was just barely squeezed out of a spot in the top ten of this rate.
I thought I was fairly complimentary. What part of are you referring to?
Relationships should be based on reciprocity, not one partner serving the other. It may not have been the intention of "Cater 2 U," but if you read the lyrics (e.g. "My life would be purposeless without you") through a dominant ideology, they give an awfully regressive image of women as gladly obsequious attendants to their men's wants and needs. In a society that still expects women to play the subservient homemaker role, it sends out a bad message when female artists release songs that play into that power structure. I also find "Cater 2 U" to be a beautifully arranged and delivered song, but the content absolutely detracts from all of that.
I was referring to the part where you said that after the a capella that the song falls short.
I see what you are saying but that debate is still redundant to me. Its a love song to a man... they are saying everything that a man would want to hear from their woman. A woman was made to be submissive to her man but to also run her empire. I don't want a wife that is so career focused that she forgets about me. 112 has a song called This Is Your Day and its very much the male equivalent to Cater 2 U. Songs like This Is A Man's World by James Brown and When A Man Loves A Woman also validate my point. If men can do it then why can't women? This reminds me of Why Did I Get Married with Tyler Perry's character and his wife. Anyways I'm done with this debate because I absolutely hate double standards.

WOAH WOAH WOAH (50 cent voice) I WANTED THIS IN THE TOP 10?
don't tell me a bunch of Destiny's child songs will fill up the top 10
Free Your Mind...... the most INNOVATING girl group track...... doesn't make it to the Top 10? Bart, are you ****ing nuts? You go up for all those camp and faux ghetto songs YET when you get, camp, ghetto and brilliance in one package you decide to give it a 2? I can't with him
Diggin On You slays but I can see why its out. I love Survivor but its always been a bit overrated to me by the legion of DC fans. Giving Him Somethin He Can Feels did better than I thought it would.... its so ol skool that I thought it would have been out. ATRL surprised me with that.

Not true. I said it's less impactful, but still effective. That a capella section is so striking, how could it not be?

I think the double standard is that it is assumed men can do it all while women might become so career-focused that they forget about their mate. But that's honestly besides the point of the song, which buys into the antiquated notion that a woman's place in the home is catering to the needs of her family. It's not to say we some kind of radical role reversal—just a little gender parity.

Wait, are you praising "Survivor" or its elimination?
Talk to your friend Ace. "Free Your Mind" was a contender for the top three.

You know, he hated Black Cat too so he clearly has a problem with black women in rock I would like to hear his thoughts on Tina Turner!

Imma need Ace to step into this thread and explain himself.
Free Your Mind is the campiest/worst song ever. It's actually hilarious if you think about it! Sing it out loud with your gay friends and you'll bust out laughing.
Aaliyah is/was the only R&B artist who successfully dabbled in rock. No camp, no cheese.

And this is how you repay me. I take out Free Your Mind, you all take out my second favorite TLC single ever. See? We're all good.

Which is what makes it great! It's like "My Humps" or "Sexy and I Know It".
En Vogue technically has 3 songs in the Top 10....... they are the chorus of Whatta Man.
I think Whatta Man should be #1 since FYM didn't make it. 2 iconic girl groups coming together to form one SUPERGROUP That song is everything TLC wanted to be but just FAILED at.
Independent Women could be #1 as well since it is the biggest girl group song in HISTORY!!!

I don't see why campy and good are mutually exclusive qualities. The hook in "Free Your Mind" SLAYS.

Aaliyah could do everything. It saddens me to think what she could have accomplished had she not died so young. This is why I really want to play that early '00s R&B diva rate—so that ATRL can understand how amazing Aaliyah is!
