But even if you look passed Whitney's death, she would still be more regarded than Janet. Whitney was America's sweetheart at one point and nothing Janet has done has every came close to The Bodyguard in global success. I don't think Whitney's personal issues swept any of that under the rug.

Janet was a punch line in the industry 2004 - 2008 thanks to Superbowl. Now people have gotten over Superbowl, so it's okay to like Janet, and since Whitney died, it's okay to like her as well. Regardless of what ppl say, artists will continue to cite them as inspirations. People will always be singing Whitney's songs, and people will always be emulating Janet's choreography and videos. So regardless of how ppl try to write them off, acts will continue to keep them alive.

Well, she's sold more than twice as many albums as Janet. Granted, she has put out FOUR more big-selling albums when you count the soundtracks.
Whitney has never been a joke. I have never felt like her issues overshadowed her status like the super bowl did for Janet. After the super bowl, Janet got tons of ********. On TV, in magazines, and whenever she was brought up in everyday life. Whitney was portrayed as more of a tragic victim, outside of the occasional parody. The fact that the world took Whitney back in so readily in '09 speaks volumes. ILTY didn't sell like TEOM because it had no hits, but for it to sell over 3M and spawn a tidy world tour after such a long hiatus is really impressive.
People seem to be "over the super bowl" because MJ died, but I still don't think people really are. Janet still has to prove herself all over again in the eyes of the public. The sales of Number Ones, after decent promotion and this never-ending tour, should say enough. I'd be shocked if Janet's next album opened with bigger sales than Discipline without a bigger-than-Feedback hit single. Whitney didn't need a hit to sell over 300K in the US alone, and it was deeper into the album sales slide than Discipline.

To this day (even prior to her death), The Bodyguard is on hot rotation on TV all the time. It's like The Notebook for middle-aged women. They love it. They love her because of it.

I mean we all had our "BOOOOOBBBAYYYYYYY" moment with Whitney but I don't think she was THAT tarnished. No1 cared that she did crack..Well they cared but it wasn't something that was focused on because it became normal, but the Superbowl with Janet really came out of nowhere and ruined her lmao.
They need to make a comedy sketch where some1 goes back in time at the superbowl and walks on stage right b4 Justin approaches Janet's boob and Scream "DON'T DO IT!!!" sasjadndsjansa d I could see "The Cleveland SHow" doing something like that lmaoooooooooo

I cant speak about Janet without ending up with warning points. But I will say she is the ONLY person up there who isn't huge in Europe. Her influence is very heavy on Americans (black ones), she is not referenced when it comes to other races because Madonna outshined her so heavily. The same cannot be said for Beyonce, Rihanna, Whitney, or Diana.

Diana and Donna both lacked in areas that Janet excelled at - videos, albums, performing, etc. Although that is no fault of their own, so that's why I don't think Diana should be included in the list. The timing of Whitney and Janet made rocketing to pop stardom more easily accessible than Diana, per se. It is for those reasons why Janet has eclipsed them, sadly.
And you brought up Donna as a means of discrediting Janet back in page 17 or so.

Regardless, it's still noted that Michael is Beyonce's greatest influence, stated by Beyoncé herself. She might not be able to follow in his footsteps completely due to gender barriers, but she could've always tried to be a female version of him, like Janet was. That way it all comes full circle and the "Janet influence" you see in Bey could just be Michael's influence instead.
How has Janet eclipsed Diana & Whitney in name or celebrity? I don't agree with that.
Someone said before Janet there was Donna. I thought it was funny & completely weird that Whitney & Tina were skipped over in favour of Donna.

We are looking for consistency honey. Sure she had bodyguard, but with all that success where was she after?
Sure Michael had thriller, and Madonna had True Blue but they still slayed after their prime. Whitney fell harder than a bowling ball. Plus Whitney rarely changed her image, whitney couldnt dance, whitney never gave you an elaborate show with all the works, whitney didn't help redefine the music video. Whitney's business deals were the pits. Janet had all the bells and whistles.
Janet was more consistent to me.

I don't feel like dragging Janet by her nappy ass Marilyn Munster wig tonight but THE FOOLISHNESS to even SUGGEST that Janet has had more influence over Whitney is ****ING INSANE!!!!!!
Where are the dance shows in honor of Janet? American Idol, X Factor and The Voice are all made looking for the NEXT Whitney not Janet. They sing Whitney's songs NOT Janet's. Every female since 1990 has Whitney as an influence from Mariah, Toni and Celine to Brandy, Monica and Christina to Lady Gaga, Rihanna and JoJo. I'M NOT HERE FOR FAIRYTALES, LIES & RUMORS!!!!! You gerls better get your life and SPEAK ****ING FACTS!!!
Janet being better than Diva Originale MY BLACK ASS!!!!! Am fuming over that MESS!!!!!!

So Whitney sold 170 million+ albums? You know I'm not gonna make this easy for you lol. Whitney prior to her death, had sold ~175mil records, Janet ~140mil. Yes, Whitney has sold more. There's no denying that.
Whitney has never been a joke? You mean the countless times MadTV has parodied her has a drug addict? How the tabloids have drug her name in the mud during the 2000s? How stans on forums have dragged her name and called her a crack head? The fact that she didn't appear on a second season of "Being Bobby Brown" because her team felt it was painting her in a negative light? Whitney was a joke in the 2000s up until she died. And the reason why Whitney had a successful album was because it was labeled as a comeback album - her first in 7 years. That was an excellent marketing ploy that worked.
People were over Superbowl prior to MJ's death. Janet was in a better place with Discipline, and ppl were over Janet once again months after MJ died. She rebuilt her own name. And the greatest hits is meant to sale over time, it's it's pointless to bring that up imo. And if you're comparing flop albums in the 2000s, Just Whitney scanned 736K to Damita Jo's 1.04mil.

Whitney hadn't been a force since BodyGuard. (Maybe because Mariah stepped in and slayed) And Whitney RARELY EVER changed her image or sound. She played it very safe. Janet took the most risk.
Janet in the 80's outlasted forces like Whitney and Madonna.
In the 90's she stood tall amongst Celine and Mariah,
And in the beggining of the 00's she still slayed right alongside the other girls like Beyonce and Britney with All For You Album. Janet is a force.
|
lol Whitney didn't even release a studio album in the mid '90s. That's silly. Trust me, I'm not propping her up because she died. I've ALWAYS felt that she gets more respect from the public than Janet, whether she deserves it or not. Janet never had something like The Bodyguard or "I Will Always Love You." That said, Janet had WAY more hits than Whitney and way more memorable hits at that, but it didn't seem to matter in the end.
Whitney didn't need to take risks. She had The Voice. And Janet hasn't even taken a risk since 1998.
lol how can you say that when Madonna is still here grossing $400 million on tour and selling 2.5 million copies of her third greatest hits album with no promo? She fell off in the '90s, but Ray of Light brought her back.
And then she started flopping and hasn't recovered. I know Janet is a force. She's my queen. It hurts me to say this stuff but you guys are just being delusional now.

Beyoncé is already established as a legend but with years to come and more and more music ahead she's just gonna get bigger i think. Everything about her just screams success and stardom so my vote goes to her<3

"Consistency" doesn't really matter, though. Janet was never and will never be as regarded as Whitney Houston. And how was Janet more consistent than Whitney? Whitney's flop era came in the 2000s. Before that, she was still very relevant, and after The Bodyguard she maintained success up until 2002. Whitney didn't fall that hard like you're saying. She declined just like every pop star, but she had an excellent reign.
