Whether Erika is a Tropical Storm, or a Category 1 hurricane, that doesn't mean you're out of the woods.
Tropical Storm Allison was "just" a tropical storm at landfall, but the flooding rains it caused all across the US led to $5 billion in damage and killed 55 people. It's the only Tropical Storm to have its name retired.
Tropical Storm Alberto caused $1 billion in damage in 1994 for flooding.
Hurricane Agnes was "only" a Category 1 but it caused $3 billion in damage and killed 128 people.
Not to mention, Irene was only a Category 1/Tropical Storm at the time of its landfalls in the US, but it caused $15 billion in damage and so forth.
Bottom line, be prepared and don't underestimate.
Well of course you always have to be prepared, you'd be dumb not to. Irene hit an area that is not used to a hurricane so obviously there was damage, same with Allison. What I'm saying is (and I don't think you're understanding) is that we have so much experience, homes & businesses are so well prepared that there's nothing to worry about.
Its so perfect right now you would never think a hurricane is on its way. Clear blue skies, nice breeze, not too hot. Literally the calm before the storm
God this is my first tropical storm. The good sis Erica better not hit Tampa Bay that much. Everything looks so dramatic on TV, glad that we don't have this in Europe. (+ I wanna watch the VMA's lol)
Erika was pretty windy today, obviously not a very major thing. I went to work and back home in public transportation and many business/offices and all educational centers closed. I live in the north though, the south it probably getting more rain and wind.
The day started out normally hot and sunny (annoying), but as afternoon approached it brought the rain and fresh weather we had been missing for so long, so I'm thankful.
