One of the requirements to be avant garde is to be experimental and innovative I do like her music though.

James Blake makes Avant-Garde but he is not mainstream, he will never have a big hit and yes Lorde and Joel Little created a sound with the attitude and extravaganza of Kanye and the minimalism of Blake, but it is Lorde who bring it for all of us on the table.

It hasn't got much to do with accoustic music. I was talking about the dark smokey voice over something that was supposed to emulate a film score. Just like what Portishead did except Lana's work is much more mainstream and is aimed to appeal a wide variety of tastes.

Lorde is not avant Garde when her sound is copy of Lana. Her videos are not interesting either.

If anything Lana fit that bill better than anyone esp in mainstream music.

As she's the first artist (a true innovator) to use collages of old film clips as a form of music video.

Oh and the fact that she blends hip hop beats over classical strings is also note worthy.

But why is it succuessful, more than Portishead and Goldfrapp, it isn't talent at all, it is intelligence, and quality.

If we hear the Harp in Video Games then we don't hear some keyboard, no a real harp and a damn good player, too.

When David Bowie exploded in mainstream, it was because of the album Let's Dance. But why? It had the quality especially with the guitar of Steven Ray Vaughn one of the best blues player ever, he created that mood for a 20 million album seller.

It's much more popular than the other two because she is "easier to listen too", i mean it's basically pop music (which isn't a bad thing). The music is much more catchy. It's more simple. She's been more exposed. Some of my the best albums are difficult listens at first and it takes a while for me to appreciate them. I feel you have to be a bit more extreme to be avant-garde.
I can't comment on David Bowie as I've only heard 4 albums of his.
