California Gurls needed that pre-recorded line because the song itself is too dated to catch anyone's attention nowadays so they needed to mix things up with that bore of a song to get the audience's attention. The other songs in the Superbowl set were strong enough classics on their own to be performed without gimmicks

The people who hate on Unconditionally only hate on it because it flopped and was the wrong single choice. Because remember when it came out and people were freaking out about how good it was?
It has good lyrics, great vocals, catchy melody, and a great Luke production. And the video is a highlight in her cinematography.

This. Why fight between two iconic and memorable singles?
Before TD came out I remember hearing the demo for E.T. (Futuristic Lover) and one of the things I loved the most where those background noises in the chorus that sounded like "suffering voices" or something (sounds weird I know), it just made it sound really cool *and interesting* ;^)
I love the final solo version but I wish they had kept those details, E.T. is such a great song.
