they could have let Avril do her "artistic" side and blame her if it underperforms

I couldn't have said it better. Everything happening in this era comes from RCA rejecting Avril's original album. WTH and Smile as single, Avril re-using TBDT looks, etc. Some people might say she should've or could've written more "commercial" stuff for her original vision, or write something commercial, yet more mature after the album was rejected. But RCA was first and main reason for all that happened.

Honestly I don't think that Slipped Away is a masterpiece. Yeah, it's very sad and emotional, and many fans can relate to it, but I find the lyrics way too simple.

Yeah, I tend to think it's a bit overrated, and especially because of the Budokan performance. I mean, I like the song, but I like others from UMS better
