Kerber had a good 4th quarter in 2015... so she needs to slay some tournaments in order to maintain #1. But even if she loses it again, she won 2 GS in 2016 and had one more final on top... that's something nobody can take from her - nor the $8m she won in prize money. The worst scenario would be a year end #2 ranking i believe which would still be phenomenal for her.

Also, the generation after Kerber is about to breakthrough as well: Siegemund, Beck & co. could become real threats and then we also have the Wunderkind Zverev in the male run. So the future seems to look bright now.

Nobody has been able to come close to their star power within the sport in over 20 years. People aren't just going to forget about them.

Idk about that, when Steffi retired there were some clear young stars (WS, Hingis, JCap). If Serena retired today who is the "star" on the tour? I agree with Judy Murray when she said that more WTA players need to embrace celebrity the way the WS and Sharapova did.

Knowing Serena, I think she's not going to play much, and I'd be not surprised if she skips the YEC as well. Loses like the ones from the SF really deflates her mentally and demotivates her.

Yeah. It REAAAAAAAAAAAALLY worries me that this may as well be the last 10+ slam generation with Serena retiring soon. That's a bit scary to think about.

I'd rather have talented and great players to serena's throne than Bouchard-esque new Kournikova fads who look pretty but can't play tennis.

Pliskova may be the next dominant player tho...(after Kerber ofc).

But unless Serena can still win majors at 35+, which I'm not sure about or Angie continues like this, which I'm absolutely not sure about we will probably have 4 different slam winners each year for a while and I'm not a big fan of that.

Wow, just wow. Much congratulations to Kerber. Truly deserving of the number one and of the second slam. Player of the Year, 99% sure she has YE#1 locked up, and an Olympic medal. Even I thought she was gonna win only one slam but she has two.

She truly is the dominating force that'll take over once Serena finishes next year if she can keep this kind of play up. Serena's time at the top is over, even if she wrestles the number one back because next year is most likely her swan year. Serena still is in prime position to get 25 but I've been more than impressed with Kerbs. Next year will be interesting. If she can show she can handle being hunted then we may have our next 5+ slam champ.

She's not guaranteed the YE ranking but there's at least a 70% chance she gets it. Serena is injured and in order to wrestle it from Kerber Serena needs to go to China, win either Wuhan or Beijing (and go deep in the other) as well as win the YEC undefeated to do it. For an uninjured Serena that wouldn't be a problem but this injured one idk. And not because I think she will lose or anything but she may not even play those tournaments period.

Kerber is awful on clay, especially outdoor clay. She won't ever win the FO unless she makes major changes like Sharapova did. Her movement is too exposed on the surface.

And Muguruza, well tbh I doubt she wins more than one slam if this is her level week in and week out. Terrible stuff. A Petra like career except with half the talent
