So it's safe to say that Duets ended this era, not Dark Side. Kelly and RCA probably didn't realize how much duets would consume time. It also explains the lack of promotion for Dark Side.
I think they probably just never imagined that Stronger would have been SO massive and stay so high on radio for like 7 months. As amazing as it was, it really kind of made it hard for a 3rd single. But I'm perfectly happy with how the Stronger era went. There were no more obvious smashes on the album. I would have liked to have seen YLM get released for Kelly though.
