The story was fairly predictable with the unlikely companions reluctantly working together and eventually come to learn from each other and become friends. I didn't understand why the aliens spoke in broken English when they weren't trying to integrate into the world, but segregate all the people to Australia. They also picked and chose what pop culture references they understood and which idioms they didn't. Most of the jokes fell flat outside of the ones that were in the trailer, and the over-use of Rhianna songs was expected but tiring after a while. The characters did become likable by the end of the film, but it took way too long to get there. On a plus side, it was nice to see a lot of diversity in the humans shown, though only two had any speaking parts. The designs on all the alien tech was gorgeous at least.
