Moves Like Jagger plummeted as well after the loss of number 1 exposure, and it took it a month and a half before radios started spinning it: the way Maroon 5 made it climb back was through performances, to which the public was always responding (I actually love the way they play the song live, almost more than the recorded version: it's less high pitched, and you feel the meaning of the lyrics twice as strong).
Payphone is surely less ear-worming (i think no songs will ever reach that kind of infectiousness for a couple of years to be honest) but way more relatable for the masses, and still completely catchy and perfect for singalongs (which is exactly what Maroon 5 does best).
With better radio response already, and the promotional efforts again up, I see good chances, very good chances for Payphone to be a natural contender for Billboard number one in a month span, even when its sales will decrease at first following the loss of number one exposure.
They have a Sprin/Summer smash in their hands. And they are used to be patient with songs that they put out (just that this time around, from what I get, every casual listener who listen to Payphone like it ignoring if they are or are not Maroon 5 fans).
I for one cross my fingers for them. They are the only properly pop band I have ever been into...
