Obviously to us as gay viewers, we're more likely to have seen other gay characters with similar story lines so it seems cliche...but it also seems somewhat irresponsible for them to chuck AIDS at the gay couple that has been so refreshingly modern and normal thus far.
I get that it's still prevalent and it's important for people to not forget the serious risk, but do gay characters always have to either deal with bullying or AIDS? Can we maybe not help the straight population move on from viewing us like that? Especially in this show. It's not about the dynamics of the gay community or even love and relationships in general. It's a 'who done it?' murder mystery legal drama.

I feel the same. To be honest I kind of hope they'll drop Oliver next season - they'd have brought awareness to the cause without dwelling on it for too long - but with what an asset he's been to solving some cases plus this new twist, I don't see that happening.
Though I guess when I think about it I don't really see a character like Connor sticking around to shoulder that much responsibility. I can see their relationship ending in a few episodes and Oliver maybe returning briefly in a recurring role further down the line in another season or two. Watching the aftereffects of his decision could be very interesting.
