All of the songs that were big in 2013 got huge boosts! It's radio's way of paying tribute to the big hits, and it comes at the expense of the rising songs. The songs from earlier in the year tend to steal plays from the newer, rising hits that are put on hold for two weeks.
Oh but Year End countdowns start after the 25th and last until the first week of January. I think those 2 weeks are usually slow for new songs on Pop and HAC.

do any songs get completely dropped after the winter freeze? or do they get normal updates once it's done?
According to that thread, Bey's "XO" was killed off thanks to the freeze
