What's interesting to me about the 1990s and 2000s is that there's actually a lack of statistically significant outliers. A lot of albums moved big numbers, but they were generally outperformed by outliers from eras with much lower album sales.
Examples:
1960s - Sgt. Peppers
1970s - Rumours, Dark Side of the Moon
1980s - Thriller, Back In Black
2010s - 21
The obvious answer is catalog sales, which is the culprit in some cases. But that also begs the question of why catalog sales of albums from the 1990s and 2000s are so comparatively awful.
Female pop dominated the 90s and they generally get bad recurrent sales compared to bands and male artists. All those female Hot AC and bubblegum pop albums that dominated the 90s aren't well regarded in general

Kendrick's performance at the Stephen Colbert Late Night show last week is one of the best of the year. Rappers tend to be boring and all over the place on stage, mainly the ones of today, but Kendrick tends to elevate his performances. Definitely the best rapper in terms of performance skills right now.
Patti has the upper reaches and the power but sadly she doesn't have near the agility as Cissy did.
Her head notes are just added for dramatic effect and it's usually just a single note or very simple runs.
But Patti is amazing tho, definitely underrated here and in the real world.
