Btw, guys, will start updating daily tomorrow! I've been feeling a little... I don't know, sad, I guess? And with the Bowie news that just came in, I just can't make it today. Hope you understand. But the good music will come, so get ready anyways! Will probably finish the EP/New Artists thing tomorrow too.
Honestly, TRF.
The news definitely was a shocker and pretty devastating.
Feel better TRF! If you ever want to talk about anything in particular, my wall is always open.
I've actually been meaning to check out that Blanck Mass album since forever purely because of the artwork. I'd also been meaning to check out the Panda Bear and U.S. Girls albums.
Surprised (and low-key disgusted) at Kiddo being so low. Especially considering it was probably my AOTY and Autre Ne Veut beat it with an album that I was fairly disappointed by.
I own No Romeo on CD but I've still never listened to it, mess.
I'll have to check out Ash Koosha, Lakker, and Javiera Mena.
#13. Danny L Harle - 'Broken Flowers' Genre: Bubblegum Bass, Tropical House, Electropop - Label: PC Music/Columbia Highlights: "Broken Flowers", "Forever", "Awake for Hours" - You'll like it if you like: Duke Dumont, SOPHIE
This EP is the representation of PC Music cleaaaarly evolving from an """"ironic"""" post-internet genre, to become actual pop music. "Without You" is kinda lame, but the other songs are perfect, fun house-pop tunes that could crossover into Pop radio. Hopefully.
#12. Amnesia Scanner - 'Angels Rig Hook' Genre: UK Bass, Radio Play, Glitch Hop - Label: Gum You'll like it if you like: Arca, Holly Herndon
So, apparently, this is a... radio play? EP, about a post-apocalyptic world, in which there are references to Google, "this could be us but you're playing" and... your dick looks great in those heels. So, yeah, it's a mess. The beats, however, are AMAZING, and the whole thing is really interesting, even if you don't know what the **** is actually going on.
#11. Aphex Twin - 'Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2' Genre: IDM, Electroacoustic, Dark Ambient - Label: Warp Highlights: "diskhat ALL prepared1mixed 13", "diskhat1", "piano un10 it happened", " - You'll like it if you like: Fennesz, Autechre
Not as good as 'Syro', yeah, but it's also way more experimental, and dark. There's lots of stuff going on, perhaps some more glitch-y IDM or piano-oriented ambient things, but it's good anyways. Also, this is a 13-track EP. Yeah, I don't get it either, but whatever.
#10. Yumi Zouma - 'II' Genre: Sophisti-Pop, Synthpop, Dream Pop- Label: Cascine Highlights: "Catastrophe", "Second Wave", "Song for Zoey & Gwen" - You'll like it if you like: Blood Orange, Beach House
Yumi Zouma’s story is unclear right now. Sometime between late 2014 and early 2015, probably after touring with Lorde, their singer Kim Pflaum left the band to start a new project, and it’s unclear if the one recording the vocals is Kim or the other vocalist (whose name I forgot), but still, it’s an incredible alt-pop EP that guarantees that, for now, their music will be as good as always.
#09. Thundercat - 'The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam' Genre: Neo-Soul, Alterantive R&B, Funktronica - Label: Brainfeeder Highlights: "Them Changes", "Lone Wolf and Cub", "Where The Giants Roam / Field of the Nephilim" - You'll like it if you like: The Internet, Frank Ocean
It's a pretty short, but sweet collection of funky, neo-soul oriented tracks. Thundercat was featured in a lot of songs from Kendrick's epic album 'To Pimp a Butterfly', and FlyLo produced a couple of tracks here as well, so if you like them as well, you should check this out.
#08. Katie Dey - 'adsfadsf' Genre: Hypnagogic Pop, Indietronica, Glitch Pop - Label: Orchid Tapes Highlights: "Fear o' the Dark", "Unkillable", "y o y o" - You'll like it if you like: Sweet Trip, U.S. Girls
A really short mixtape/EP/album, with very gorgeous, colorful, lo-fi tracks that remind me of the IDM-pop hybrid of Sweet Trip and the weird psych effects of the latest U.S. Girls album. She really deserves more recognition, and yeah I know the title is stupid, but the music is not, I promise!
#07. DJ Paypal - 'Buy Now' Genre: Footwork, Nu-Disco, Bubblegum Bass - Label: LuckyMe Highlights: "I'm Ready", "bEbay", "You Got Me" - You'll like it if you like: Machinedrum, Todd Terje
This is some of the most ****ed-up dance music out there. DJ Paypal takes many, different electronic music genres that don’t seem to have anything in common (like, Techno, Disco, Trap, Batucada, etc.) and mixes them. And it sounds… actually, it sounds quite amazing!
#06. Nicolas Jaar - 'Nymphs II' Genre: Microhouse, Ambient House, Glitch - Label: Other People You'll like it if you like: Jon Hopkins, Boards of Canada
The EP only has two tracks, and it’s only 15 minutes long, but those 15 minutes are more than enough to satisfy you. It’s in my opinion, one of the most interesting stuff Nicolas himself ever released.
I only really know Yumi Zouma and Thundercat from that selection of EPs. Although I recognise Nicolas Jaar. Does he do remixes too?
OH, and my friend who likes Yumi Zouma said something about the original vocalist being kicked out the band for "having the wrong image" or something...?
OctaHate. I agree with everything you said on your comment, except for the video, I liked the second one better. The last line though. I'm actually mad about that.
And from Javiera Mena, I'm getting into Sincronía, Pegaso. It's really, really catchy, I'm surprised.
#10. Le1f Genre: Experimental Hip Hop, Hip House, Glitch Hop - Country: USA
Le1f has been making music for about 5 years now, but only released 'Riot Boi', his debut album, two months ago. I only listened to it two months ago. His beats are insane, his flow is insane, and he doesn't like to be stuck in one style, which is something I admire.
#09. Future Brown Genre: UK Bass, Trap Rap, Alternative R&B - Country: USA/UK/Senegal
Future Brown is some kind of "supergroup" formed by Fatima Al Qadiri, Nguzunguzu and J-Cush, and also probably one of the most underrated acts of 2015, their debut self-titled album was great, full of bangers after bangers with futuristic beats.
#08. Tove Styrke Genre: Synthpop, Electropop, Dance-Pop - Country: Sweden
Tove isn't exactly a new artist, but she considers her sophomore album 'Kiddo' to be her actual debut, so, like, whatever. That album is full of catchy hooks, meaningful lyrics and interesting beats, and, no shade, but she actually deserves the same recognition the other Tove has outside of Europe.
LIZ's music is like some kind of... futuristic take on Mariah Carey, early Britney/Christina and even Ariana Grande. Not necessarily in a PC Music-kind of way, since she's more Pop in every sense, but her style is definitely interesting, and will probably release her debut album this year. Let's hope it'll be great!
#06. Gwenno Genre: Indie Pop, Indietronica, Neo-Psychedelia - Country: Wales
Gwenno Saunders used to be a member of The Pipettes, a group that ended a few years ago, and came back with a solo album titled 'Y Dydd Olaf'... sung entirely in Welsh. Except for one song, that is sung in Cornish, a language spoken by 550 people, aprox. And as weird as it is, is great too, full of weird, psych-electropop tracks fans of UMO and Robyn would both enjoy. An underrated masterpiece, to be honest!
#05. Oneohtrix Point Never - 'Comissions II' Genre: Progressive Electronic, Glitch, Drill and Bass - Label: Warp Highlights: "Bullet Hell Abstraction I", "Bullet Hell Abstraction III" - You'll like it if you like: Fennesz, Squarepusher
An unpopular opinion:This is not only better than Commissions I, but also better than R Plus Seven. This EP actually is a good... prelude? to 'Garden of Delete', since it's more rhythmic, his takes on glitch-y Drill and Bass are insane. And I love that. The first two tracks are great, but "Suite from Magnetic Rose" is a bit too long (I mean 18-minutes, ), but has some great parts, so it's cool. Luv ya Daniel!
#04. Kelela - 'Hallucinogen' Genre: Alternative R&B, UK Bass, Wonky - Label: Warp Highlights: "A Message", "Gomenasai", "All the Way Down" - You'll like it if you like: FKA twigs, Tinashe
Kelela released her debut mixtape, 'Cut 4 Me', in 2013, in which she collaborated with many producers from the Night Slugs/Fade to Mind roster. After a few delays, she released 'Hallucinogen', an 6-song EP with input from Arca, DJ Dahi and some other frequent collaborators. And, it is, truly, banger-after-banger-after-banger. That being said, I DO feel like she lacks a bit of personality - like, the Arca-produced "A Message" and "Hallucinogen" sound like FKA twigs, "Rewind" like Katy B, "All the Way Down" is literally a Tinashe reject. Still, it's not like I'm dragging her, because I love her, but whatever.
#05. Empress Of Genre: Electropop, Art Pop, Dance-Pop - Country: Honduras/USA
She is an Honduran-American singer, songwriter and producer, who had been making music for about 5 years, but anyways, she released her debut album, 'Me', this year, and that was where I discovered her. It's equal parts art-pop and UK garage-influenced dance bangers. It's fun and interesting! I'm sure she'll go far!
#04. Clarence Clarity Genre: Alternative R&B, Glitch Pop, Indietronica - Country: UK
Clarence Clarity is a mysterious project, made by someone whose real name we don't know for sure, that released its first full-length album this year, 'No Now'. It's a collection of well-written, but dense, heavy, even noise-y R&B/electropop songs that sound like FKA twigs mixed with Animal Collective, M.I.A. and Sleigh Bells, for some reason. And it's mindblowing.
#03. the band formerly known as "Viet Cong" Genre: Post-Punk, Art Punk, Noise Rock - Country: Canada
Ok, let me start with one thing: that band name was stupid. And pointless. And even more considering how their defense for that was basically "because it sounded cool" or something. But there's one reason I didn't really care about that, because their music is great. Their debut album is probably one of my favorite Rock albums of the decade, they have power, aggressivity, and catchy hooks all in one. And, now that they're going to change their name, I'm just hoping for them to get bigger.
#03. Nicolas Jaar - 'Nymphs III'' Genre: Microhouse, Ambient House, Tech House - Label: Other People Highlights: "Swim" - You'll like it if you like: Disclosure, Jon Hopkins
Actually, this EP is only 2 songs long (just like the previous on the Nymphs series), but it's actually 18-minutes long. And, its first song, "Swim", damn... it's probably my favorite Nico Jaar track ever? It's kind of like an experience to hear it, probably one of his most upbeat too, and it's also 13 minutes long, which also helps. No, but for real, listen to it, it's amazing dance track. The other track is meh, a nice ambient piece. But it's overall a great, great release. But we want AN ALBUM NEXT, MR. JAAR!
