The key phrase was "male-dominated" and the sentence-structure made it clear that male artists were the talents and opposite of gimmicks.
Oddly enough, though, Harlem Shake was the only real gimmick #1 last year, and obviously it's by a male artist.
Wrecking Ball's gimmicky video absolutely helped propel it to #1 with streaming, BUT surely you are not going to deny the 477,000 copies it sold that week, no? So even in a parallel universe without streaming points it still would have done tremendously well that week and possibly shot to #1.
