Adele, Shirley Bassey Set for Big Post-Oscars Sales Gains
Quote:
"Skyfall" could see a 45% jump after Adele's win; Bassey's signature version of "Goldfinger" eyes a 275% gain
Music from Adele, Dame Shirley Bassey, Jennifer Hudson and more are all due to see huge sales increases on this week's Billboard charts thanks to Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony.
Sources suggest "Skyfall," which won Adele and Paul Epworth the Oscar for best original song, could see a 45% jump in digital download sales for the week ending Feb. 24. In the previous week, the single moved 36,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. (We won't have the latest week's official SoundScan sales figures until Wednesday, Feb. 27.)
"Skyfall" is the first Academy Award winner to have also been a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 since 2003, when Eminem's No. 1 single "Lose Yourself" won. "Skyfall" is also the first song from a James Bond film to take home the Oscar.
Speaking of James Bond, it was a big night on the Awards for the silver screen's most famous secret agent. The Oscars celebrated Bond's 50th anniversary in motion pictures with a montage of moments and a performance of "Goldfinger" by Dame Shirley Bassey.
Bassey's signature recording of the 1964 film's title track could see a gain of more than 275% in sales. Though, the song might still only sell around 1,000 to 2,000 in the week ending Feb. 24. (That figure could climb the following week [ending March 3] after a full week's worth of impact from the Oscars is felt.)
Bassey also made an impact in the social space, as Twitter blew up following her appearance on the show. On the day of the Oscars, according to Topsy analytics, Bassey was mentioned 36,000 times on Twitter -- up from just 150 mentions a day earlier.
Traffic to Bassey's Wikipedia page also soared by 30% on Feb. 24, receiving 6,600 views.
Adele and Bassey were among many music stars who took the stage at the Academy Awards. The show staged a tribute to recent movie musicals, which featured the music of "Dreamgirls," "Chicago" and "Les Miserables."
Two previous Oscar winners performed signature songs from their respective musical films: Jennifer Hudson did "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from "Dreamgirls" while Catherine Zeta-Jones performed "All That Jazz" from "Chicago." Sales of Hudson's track might gain by more than 200%, while "All That Jazz's" sales could be up by just a handful of units.
Rounding out the musicals tribute was the cast of "Les Miserables," which sang "Suddenly" and "One Day More." Their sales could jump by a respective 200% and 100% in the week ending Feb. 24. Still, both will sell just a modest number, with only "One Day More" maybe on its way to around 4,000 downloads.
The soundtrack albums of "Dreamgirls" and "Chicago" will also see big gains on the chart, with increases in the range of 230% and 35%, respectively.
If the show wasn't already jam-packed with pop stars thanks to Bassey, Adele and Hudson, then Barbra Streisand certainly amped-up the diva quotient when she appeared on stage. The icon sang her 1974 No. 1 Hot 100 hit "The Way We Were" during a tribute to the late Marvin Hamlisch. He was a three-time Oscar-winner, and also took home a trophy for best original song for co-writing "The Way We Were." Hamlisch died on Aug. 6, 2012.
Sales of "The Way We Were" might gain by 175% this week to about 2,000 downloads.

A 45% increase from last week should put Skyfall at around 52K.

Not likely, since it's Album-Only on iTunes. May be different on Amazon, though.

I remember they did that for Glamorous back in 2007.... They made it "album only" and it tumbled down the charts until her label decided to make it available for download again

Eh. I would switch those.
We already know the airplay and downloads for this week and S&S is ahead in both. S&S also beat Stay in streaming last week so I see no reason to expect that to change. Meaning S&S is ahead in every category.
My last minute predictions:
1. Harlem Shake
2. Thrift Shop
3. Scream and Shout
4. Stay
5. One Way Or Another
6. IKYWT
7. When I Was Your Man
8. Suit and Tie
9. Locked Out of Heaven
10. Ho hey

I don't plan to make any predictions further, but i think HS still will be #1, but it should be last week @#1 for it. I can see that it will fall fast soon, as seems HS viral hype has peaked.
