I never thought we'd have a male winner. NEVER.
Some stats:
2012 marks only the third year in ATRL's existence (2005 and 2009 are the other two) where Rihanna didn't finish in the top ten. She usually is in the top five, to be honest. [SOS and Unfaithful in 2006, Umbrella in 2007, Disturbia in 2008, Rude Boy, Only Girl, Love the Way You Lie and What's My Name in 2010, We Found Love in 2011.)
Wide Awake listing so high means Katy has appeared in the top ten for four of the past five years.
Taylor and Pink have yet to make the top ten here.
Surprisingly (or not), this is Usher's highest ranking on any ATRL Top 50. Fitting, as it's his best single ever.
Lovatics take note: Demi is the first "Disney girl" to make it into the top ten.
Surprisingly, neither Lady Gaga or Beyoncé have ever won our year end poll. (They came closest in 2005, but were somehow overtaken by Kelly Clarkson - still don't understand that three years later.)
Again, we are felled as we don't match up with Pazz & Jop; "Call Me Maybe" listing at #2, however, brings us the closest we've ever come to it.
2005: We Belong Together (#19 on P&J)
2006: Promiscuous (Not in P&J's top ten, IIRC)
2007: Umbrella (#2, after Rehab, which barely made our top twenty)
2008: Womanizer (#29)
2009: My Life Would Suck Without You (don't make me laugh)
2010: Teenage Dream (Either #16 or #18, P&J's number one - **** You - finished in the thirties here)
2011: Someone Like You (right artist, wrong song, as Rolling in the Deep won Pazz and Jop)
Maybe it'll be lucky number 2013?
Thanks so much Keithers! Wonderful job.
