Thank you!
You can state that there have been high ratings on Thursday a million more times and highlight it, but the VMAs have been held on a Sunday several years in a row. Moving the day after a five-year routine will clearly have a negative effect on the ratings. And like I said earlier, you could see that one of the lowest ratings were back in 2006 - a Thursday. The year before that, it was held on a Sunday, and it saw a big dip the following year when it was changed to a Thursday. You can't attribute the decline to only one thing.

I think the move is a plausible excuse, but it's not like it hasn't been promoted with commercials over the last 6 weeks or even announced months ago that it'd be at Staples on a Thursday. Star power is a big factor in these award shows.

Well if the messy stars ain't attending, either are the viewers
No chance of Gaga arriving in a UFO. No chance of Britney falling off the stage presenting an award. No chance of Beyonce stealing some awards for herself. No scandals were gonna be there. We had to accept ****** Amber Rose being preggers. I mean who gives a rat ass.

kii. at anyone thinking if [insert their fav here] had been there, it would've been any different this year. This problem comes down to planning and marketing more than anything, this is not just a few million off, it's -50%. Sorry, but that loss of 50% didn't come from your fave, and there's little they could have done more even if they could bring in a few more viewers than the 2 A-list performers last night.

This is first show Rihanna performed that flopped. BRITs, Grammys, Oprah all did good. xoxo

Ensuring some of the bigger names (Beyonce, Gaga, Britney) is apart of planning and marketing. They didn't have them so they scrambled. I mean, they called Demi Lovato performing on the pre-show "big news". And considering the last few years have seen increases with each of those ladies being involved somehow, for there to be a drop the year none of them are concerned with the show isn't coincidental. Hell Britney, was among the top tweeted acts prior to the show, over many of the performers and presenters.
When it comes to shows like this where the viewers are as fickle as they are when their beloved fave messes up, they contribute a large majority.

The general public, for the most part, does not give two ***** when the show is held. The date discrepancy has nothing to do with it.
Accept the fact that it was a slow year for music, thus so music videos, and the show lacked controversial names. When you say Gaga, Britney, Bieber, beyonce, it evokes something. People know Rihanna and Katy by, "oh yeah, catchy songs. Cool." They generally do not spark controversial interest

I explained why it didn't do well
Quote:
Oh I know exactly why.
Whitney hosted the 1996 Kids Choice Awards. She has been faithful to them ever since.
Whitney had a respectable tribute at the Billboard Awards. The legend blessed them with decent ratings.
Whitney had a tribute including Mariah Carey, Brandy, Monica, Beyonce's tears, Chaka Khan, and Beyonce's head-bop. The icon blessed them with decent ratings.
MTV didn't mention Whitney's name throughout the entire show, but had time to post the legend Adam from Beastie Boy's photo on a screen.
The VOICE PUNISHED THEM FOR THEIR BEHAVIOR

 Idiots. They're all idiots.

The VMAs used to be on Thursdays all the time years ago.

Right, I do agree that they clearly were lacking in the goods, or at the very least presenting them to make them so. The point being, however, this isn't an issue of -5%, this is 50%. The blame can't be placed on the 2 A-list artists that showed up. If [insert fav artist here] showed up instead of them, *even if* they did boost the show over them it would only be a couple percentage points. Not -50%.
The show was so far gone, the problem here goes much further than one fav not showing up. I do agree that starpower was lacking too, but it's not because of the 2-3 stars that were there. It's because of the other missing dozen slots that are usually there every year.

Agreed, from 1997-2003 it was held on thursdays, then in 2004 it was held on a Sunday and the ratings did just fine.
But it's a 50% dip, the BIGGEST dip in their ratings history. Definitely multiple reasons were at play and the DNC was the biggest one IMO.
