so in the end you say, that neither success, nor awards is an indication of sb's legendary status. Also the Grammy's arent an indication bc many legends don't even have 1, let alone 20. But they are certfied legends like Bowie or Bob Dylan
artists without Grammys:
Bjork
Nas
2Pac
Guns N Roses
Patti Smith
Kiss
Bob Marley
Hendrix
Queen (over 200m albums sold)
Led Zeppelin (btw over 200m albums sold)
Diana Ross
Janis Joplin
Buddy Holly
The Who
Chuck Berry
Grammys is no indication of quality, bc if it was, it would mean that some of the most impacting and legendary music artists of all times have had 0 impact, but beyoncé had? No serious music journalist would rank her above Hendrix, Led, Janis or The Who...
so sales are out of the equation
so are grammys/awards
can we objectively measure impact? Like have the legendary 5 had less impact than beyoncé, despite beyoncé heavily borrowing from their musical imprints?
Saying she is above all of the 5 mentioned acts means that beyoncé herself must be an original who cannot be linked to any of those that came b4 her. What has she done better than Tina, Janet etc? What is she more known for than they are? vocals? performing? There was a time in history when Janet was synonymous with the word performer.
Whatever the hive claims, it's highly subjective and doesn't hold up when you take the time to analyze it.
Take the touring gross. Carey is a bad touring artist with embarrassing results. However, she used to hold the overall record for selling out the Tokio Dome, selling 150,000 and then 200,000 tickets in 1996 and 1998 respectively - within minutes. How is that less notworthy than Beyoncé slaying concerts in Europe? Not to mention that Carey sold out all of her concerts in Europe, including Bercy and Wembley in the 90's and 2003. I find that arrogant to say it's beneath Beyoncé - also it cannot be objectively varified.
Also it is not on us to defend her legendary status, it's on the hive to show receipts how she is one. So far nothing's there.
Beyoncé is a huge name, but I come from an era in which people slept in front of the hotels that my favs stayed in and then ran after the cars and screamed - to a point in which they still cannot go outside in Europe without creating chaos. LIke Carey when she was greeted by 10,000 screaming fans in Tokyo during the shoot of the Boy video which was then shut down by police because city transport had collapsed at the point - and the year was 2003.
Put Madonna on a square in Buenos Aires and the entire population would greet EVITA with tears in their eyes. You could have put Whitney somewhere in South Africa and she would have rendered a Nelson Mandela convention humanless.
I come from an era when everybody wanted to look like the legendary 5. Look at old footage, you see Madonna clones, Whitney clones, Mariah clones, Janet clones, Céline clones everywhere.
I am not saying that this is what impact means, but show me receipts for Beyoncé. Is it the almost daily 5 minutes that Wendy reports about her latest endeavors? Is it the weeks of charting on the BB200 with an album? Given that it was almost impossible to chart for more than 200 weeks during any time in music history due to complete different chart measures. U know like physical singles sales have never contributed towards the albums BB placements like digital song sales are today. The conditions were ultimately harder and way different than today.
Beyoncé is a huge star, but she is not a legend imo. The stats don't suggest that.
