69. Chance the Rapper f/ T-Pain, Kirk Franklin & Noname - "Finish Line / Drown"


Really really reminds me of Pusha Man/Paranoia off Acid Rap in how it showcases
both the negative + positive forces that drive him to do what he does. Just how I like
my CTR, with a sweetness to draw you in but not enough to leave you with a cavity.

68. Japandroids - "Near to the Wild Heart of Life"


Their leave of absence drove home the point that while the basics of the Japandroids
shtick should be clear to anyone with ears, it doesn't matter much when no one can match
their energy. Eye used to be gud but now am bad

67. Japanese Breakfast - "Everybody Wants to Love You"


On the opposite end of the Japan spectrum... wellz actually even if the delivery is
obscured a bit in the haze, I think the spirit that shines through is similarly infectious.
Not representative of what the album's about, but still an album highlight.

66. Usher - "Crash"


Well Climax's hopeful little cousin deserved Can't Stop the Feeling-level success, but maybe flopping
is the risk you run when you choose to go for nuance over blunt force delivery, and that's the world's loss

Lying in the Grass was the only song above average on Painting With tbh. Versace on the Floor is so good, I still listen to it pretty much every week Wasn't really crazy about Near to the Wild Heart of Life, cause it doesn't reach the level of basically anything from Celebration Rock but I'm still excited for the album. I need to get into Pinegrove, the album was pretty nice, but nothing really stood out for me on the first listen.

Eh well you could prob. trace it all back to that SHINee song from 2012, I haven't heard anything new from them yet though. But yea it is a process, there should be a few left on the list still.

I totally forgot about that Animal Collective album, nothing that memorable outside of Floridada for me. In Common is the best thing Alicia's done in years, a mess at it not even being included on her album

65. Tove Lo - "True Disaster"


The Do What U Want/Love Me Harder/Style hit formula scores another winner! Now I liked Lady Wood enough (minus the title...) but most defo not a coincidence that its strongest song was like the one to eschew squiggly synth drops in favor of a good old classic strong pop melody.

64. The Sun Days - "Don't Need to Be Them"


Some str8-up jingle jangle goodness I was lucky to stumble upon. Started off as
an HM but one random listen + I had to boot it up 40 spots cuz I just can't resist.

63. ABRA - "Vegas"


Her ~vibe doesn't necessarily lend itself to hella singles like that, but style and
substance come together for a post-EP-intro track that can roll with the best of em.

62. Young Thug - "Harambe"


A song about hashtags, perc and pills, taking care of your own ****ing family while aiming at others', etc. that really does carry itself with the feral intensity of what you imagine a true hero's final moments might have sounded like. Pouring 1 out.

60. Hamilton Leithauser & Rostam - "Sick as a Dog"


To me (structurally) this feels like an updated take on some long-lost old American folk song. I think his
voice on the high notes is my favorite moment on an album full of ****ing awesome little moments.

59. Wonder Girls - "Why So Lonely"


There's so much going on in a lot of K-Pop songs to the point where I can't focus on anything at all, but WG's take on reggae is chill enough to hold my attention but still well-crafted enough to have me honing in on something new every time I listen.

58. Fifth Harmony - "That's My Girl"


Low-key WFH was the bop of the year, but long after the point where I've only
been able to enjoy it in small doses, this propulsive STOMPER hasn't gotten old.

57. LVL UP - "Naked in the River with the Creator"


A nice lil drawn-out creation(?) tale of sorts, with that distortion coming in at the 3-min mark as the starring role.

56. Vince Staples - "War Ready"


The Andre sample is soo beastly, but I mean take it away and you're still left with
a top-tier Vince Staples song that does everything those are supposed to do in spadezsz.

Just a lot to love here - the billboard hot #1 chorus melody, all the kinetic tension
building up outside of it, and the mother****ing sass level permeating the whole shabang.

54. ScHoolboy Q f/ Jadakiss - "Groovy Tony / Eddie Kane"


A great lead single that got even better with the help of an added companion song and a Jadakiss verse.
"My heart's getting colder, when I hug your mom and look over her shoulder, you notice I got the ______!

Could be sung in a foreign language and I think I'd still get the sense that
it's a song about leaving drinking on the city train. + again just what a voice.

Ahh there's the ENERGY that's been either missing or way misplaced on...

Boiii I don't know what it's about either but I know it's the prettiest
song on an album (maybe in a discography) chock full of em. A moment.
