A Light That Never Comes is very odd for a LP song but I liked it. Sweater Weather is definitely one of my favorite songs of the year. I demand a recap soon to see what I missed. I've been MIA, sorry man!

I'm so much more hit and miss with him lately than I can ever recall being with him before. At least he's not David Guetta. *shudder*

I wish you wouldn't, especially since there's still a good chance that you can win a prize even now, but I do understand.

The YECA: Top 100 Singles (70-61, Part One: The Singles)
Let's talk about singles 70-61, baby. Let's talk about you and me...or not.
| In This Moment
Adrenalize
Another song that was much higher on this list before I just grew tired of it by the end of the year, "Adrenalize" is the moment (no pun intended) where I FINALLY got In This Moment. For years, I had been told to check out In This Moment, and I just didn't really get it. I mean, it all sounds good enough, I guess, but nothing clicks with me. I was then pointed to "Blood", and I thought it was more interesting than what I had heard from the band before, but I still wasn't convinced. It took one of the best music instrumentals of the year to convince me that maybe, just maybe, In This Moment was worth listening to. And trust me, that's not an accolade I throw around lightly, but the music in the verses and in the bridge is just unbelievable. |
| A$AP Rocky ft. Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar
****in' Problems
When you listen to "****in' Problems", you are immediately made aware of three things. First, this isn't exactly the deepest song ever made. Second, the talent assembled for this track is staggering. Even beyond A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar and Drake are two incredibly talented rappers, and 2 Chainz has a presence to him that few in the rap game can match. Third? That beat. That ****ING beat. If there was ever an instance of a beat carrying a song, this would be it. That's not to say that the verses on this song are not good, because they are, but that beat, man...that beat. When I look back at 2013 years from now, this beat will be one of the first things I think about. |
| Capital Cities
Kangaroo Court
Let's be honest with ourselves here: This is no "Safe and Sound". "Safe and Sound" is a once in a lifetime type of song, and Capital Cities will NEVER reach those kind of heights again. But if you just try to ignore "Safe and Sound" and listen to "Kangaroo Court" by itself, you'll realize that it has a lot going for it. It's not as catchy as "Safe and Sound", it doesn't have quite as interesting of a beat as "Safe and Sound", and it's just not as good as "Safe and Sound". But that does not mean that it's not worth listening to. Again, "Safe and Sound" is the kind of song that would overshadow the discographies of most artists. It's a minor miracle that another Capital Cities song can even play in the same ballpark, but "Kangaroo Court" can. |
| Crash Kings
Hot Fire
I had almost completely forgotten about this "Mountain Man" band when this song was first unleashed. "Mountain Man" had an interesting quality to it. It felt like five different songs, but all of them had an overarching pounding beat to go along with them. "Hot Fire" is not that kind of song. If anything, it definitely feels like one song instead of five. But, in this case, that's actually a very good thing. It allows the band to focus, instead of trying to create multiple songs in one. That focus is apparent when the chorus blows onto the scene and destroys everything in its path. It's not hard at all for me to enjoy a song like "Hot Fire", really. Any time you can give me a pounding hard rock beat and (at the very least) competent vocals, I can be satisfied. |
| Volbeat
Cape of Our Hero
Ugh, there are so many more single-worthy tracks on Volbeat's latest album. WHY did this not only get released as a single, but as the official first single?! The other two singles from this era for Volbeat were so much stronger and more Volbeat-y. That's not a word, I know, but bear with me. "Cape of Our Hero" is okay on its own merits, and I probably would have enjoyed it more if it was, say, a third or fourth single. But first? With THIS album full of singles? I just don't buy it. It's probably the weakest Volbeat single I've heard, actually. Of course, since this is Volbeat, one of my favorite bands, we're talking about here, that means a spot in the top 70. I'm biased, I know. |
| Young the Giant
It's About Time
Wow, did this song ever come out of nowhere for me. Young the Giant was barely even on my radar. In fact, the biggest positive I could come up with for anything YTG-related before this song was that Volbeat did a great cover of their biggest hit, "My Body", on their latest album. I went into the first listen of "It's About Time" with extreme trepidation...and a little bit of excitement after learning that the song was charting on both Alternative and Active Rock radio. Doesn't really fit the Young the Giant M.O., right? I mean, we all know the Young the Giant of "My Body" and "Cough Syrup" fame. I mean, a song charting on the harder rock format from YOUNG THE GIANT? Lo and behold, this song absolutely ROCKS. And this year is only the beginning. It impacted me at the end of the year, so it's almost a certainty to chart next year, too! |
| Avenged Sevenfold
Hail to the King
I was not really a big fan of the latest Avenged Sevenfold album. I know, I know, Avenged Sevenfold is supposed to be a band that I'm a big fan of. As someone who is a fan of heavy metal and particularly the metal of the 1980's and 1990's, you would think that I would see Hail to the King as an homage with how similar many of the songs sound to classic metal hits. I can't get past the idea that the band straight up ripped off those bands with their songs, though. The title track is the lone exception. I'm sure there's a song this song is "paying homage" to, but "Hail to the King" is so badass that it rises above the stigma that haunts the rest of the album. At over 5 minutes, it's not even close to being Avenged Sevenfold's longest and most interesting epic, but when compared to the songs surrounding it, it suddenly becomes that much more potent. |
| Stone Temple Pilots
Out of Time
There were few fans of STP that were entirely excited when it was announced that Chester Bennington was replacing long-time (and troubled) vocalist Scott Weiland. I was one of those fans. Chester has ALWAYS sounded somewhat like Scott, even dating back to the early days of Linkin Park, and I don't think that's really a coincidence. It was an inspired choice to bring on Chester by the rest of STP, because they knew that he would fit like a glove. "Out of Time" is a fantastic first single to unleash onto the world, as it showcases STP at their most lively in a long time, most likely a byproduct of Chester bringing in new life to a band that desperately needed it. And a lot of Stone Temple Pilots fans had to eat crow. |
| Lady Gaga ft. R. Kelly
Do What U Want
Say what you will about the lyric structure, and it's not a pretty sight, but one thing Lady Gaga knows how to do is put together a strong retro-sounding beat with even stronger and louder vocals. When you listen to "Do What U Want", you find yourself being transported back to the 1980's, perhaps even into the late 1970's, with a pulsating sound that could liven up any party. Along the way, we make a pitstop in the 1990's to pick up 90's staple (and fallen icon) R. Kelly, giving new life to a career that was long thought to be dead. I swear, the first time that I heard Kelly's voice first appear in the song, I had chills running down my spine. It feels odd to say that, given that I've never REALLY cared about Kelly's music, let alone his personal life, but that voice with THIS beat is a fantastic combination, as is the combination of two powerful singers on...you know the drill. And yes, I have listened to the Aguilera studio version of the song. I prefer the original. |
| David Bowie
The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
When I first listened to "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)", I was impressed...but not overly so. I thought it was an interesting song, but not something that I would find myself going out of my way to listen to too often, especially given the other great songs on The Next Day. "Valentine's Day"! "Love Is Lost"! "If You Can See Me"! There's just so many great songs on David Bowie's latest that I thought this song would be lost in the shuffle before too long. It turns out that I extremely underestimated this song's ability to latch on to a listener and refuse to let go. While some songs on The Next Day faded and lost some potency, "The Stars" actually GAINED esteem from me over the course of the rest of the year. The last 90 seconds of the song are particularly inspired, with perhaps the best and most lively music on Bowie's new album, which is saying a lot. |

40 songs down, 60 to go. The next set will feature...of course, songs 60-51, and I hope to get this posted tomorrow. The next Red Hint Giveaway post will be coming shortly!

Yeah I like to **** I got a ****in problem. And I like Out of Time but its still super weird hearing it lol. It's like a mash up. Not that Chester's voice isn't suited for that type of music, just that I associate it more with all the crazy things LP has done.

I know that I shouldn't be helping, really...but I'm just going to say that, uh, your guesses on the last hint are WAYYYYY off. As in, every single song (hell, and artist) you've guessed will not show up until MUCH later on.
Another hint to help you along: It does not hurt to look at my profile to look for artists that had albums and/or singles come out this year. *wink wink*
