This album seems be to be very good because I've seen it in like 3-4 album countdowns this year.
I remember I liked "Islands" from them.

Still gotta check the album complete, but I liked Angels, and even more Chained.
Oh, I wonder if they surpassed the masterpiece that was Islands

I think it is, I had to listen to it a couple of times before I really started to feel it.

Admittedly never heard anything by The XX.
But I hear great things about them so maybe I'll check them out next year.

I don't know why I thought you'd know them
hopefully

And I listened to a couple singles of The XX, couldn't really get into them excited for your Top 3
|
I hope you're thinking about listening to it now
I think The xx aren't a singles artist at all, their albums are meant to be listened to as a whole. they're very atmospheric and that only works when you hear the songs together, in context. so maybe you could give them another try?

Yasss. "I just want to cry through this album from beginning to end." I feel you. Agree on everything you wrote, really. It's even better than their debut. Most people didn't seem to give it a proper chance. Angels, Fiction, Our Song and, most of all, Chained.
|
I'm glad you love it just as much maybe they didn't, but I guess it's also not for everyone, even though that's sad

before we break into the top 3, here is another special announcement
TOP ALBUMS OF 2o12
BEST MEXICORE ALBUM OF 2o12
PIERCE THE VEIL | Collide With The Sky
yes, I gave them their own category because honestly, it neither would have been fair nor felt right to me to put them into the same list as everyone else, considering how much they and this album mean to me. I can't say how proud I am of them for making this record. they've excelled themselves in a way I didn't consider possible.
their second album already was a clear improvement to their debut, and with their third album they took it another step further. it's more structured and consistent, more dense than its predecessor, while they've still managed to stick to their multifaceted style. they continue making use of many different influences - pop, rock, punk, metal, latin - and not randomly, they all have their time and place: listen to Bulls In The Bronx, that starts out as a brutal hardcore smash, leaves room for a flamenco guitar solo in the middle and ends with a beautiful piano outro. they also incorporate more keyboard/electronic sounds that fit in well between the impulsive guitar riffs and furious drum beats. despite the fact that their songs have become more aggressive than ever, there are still enough quiet moments, where especially Vic's voice stands out beautifully. you can tell he's worked on his vocals a lot, they're less whiny and more controlled, and he's also learned to do screaming now. the three features on the album are well chosen, complementing the respective tracks perfectly, and especially the female vocals in the last song are a nice change.
lyrically, this album impressed me so much because it's incredibly personal. I really admire Vic for being so honest and open about his personal life and the struggles he goes through, it's very relatable, moving and most of all, inspiring; it creates an even stronger bond between the band and the fans because it shows that in the end, we're all in this together and go through the same ****. apart from that, he just has such an amazing way with words, he can describe the most tragic situations with morbid expressions and still make them sound beautiful. it's heart-breaking.
all in all, this album is a wonderful gift for both for fans and those who might become fans in the future; it shows the band know where their strengths are and emphasizes them, and it is also a display of incredible passion and willingness to work hard in order to steadily keep improving and moving forward from the band.
favorite tracks A Match Into Water. The First Punch. Hold On Till May.
previous albums

I must admit, I haven't heard about The XX before, but I checked their album out because your review sounded interesting. It's actually a very good album, very chilled. I get the image of a cool lounge where you can just chill out when I hear these songs. Nice stuff.

The way you talked about Collide With The Sky
It really is an amazing album and I'm more then happy that I took a second a listen because of you, because I understand how it is to connect to one of their albums so well, and I love that about them, a lot of artist lack the ability to connect with an audience and especially with Pop-Punk Alternative type bands like PTV sometimes the music just fly through your head, but one of their biggest strengths I think is how well they can make you connect to any one of their songs.
And it really is amazing how Vic's vocals have improved because I remember them getting a lot of critique for that whiny style of singing (even if it kind of made me love them a lot), nothing is better then hearing your favorite artist show growth and evolve with their music.
Everyone should really listen to them, they have a lot to offer and I only think they can go up from here, bravo review
