For this category, I decided to focus on one type of anthem: empowering independence anthems that could help somebody get through a break-up.
The first song is Miley Cyrus - On My Own. This is an anthem for getting through a relationship where you were controlled. The song flat out states how she felt like she was only catering to Liam's needs, never to her own, and she needed to figure out a way to leave the relationship because she's better on her own. She says 'don't be afraid of alone'. Never feel like you are trapped in a torturous relationship! Take action! Who cares what might end up happening? You're finally in control of your life after breaking up, and you can find somebody who actually sees the relationship lasting.
The second song is Kylie Minogue - Someday ; one of the best songs on her best album. It is an anthem for getting through an abusive-ish relationship. This song follows the same theme as the first one: you're better now without your significant other. She says in the song how her boyfriend claims that she 'can't be alone', and how she will 'show him' right there. Kylie was abused and used by this man, and now that the relationship is over, he's saying he was the one being used and abused, and she will come back for him again one day. She definitely IS better off without him.
The final song I chose was Lana Del Rey - She's Not Me (Ride Or Die). This song is the complete opposite of the previous two songs. It doesn't exactly seem like it's an anthem, but in my opinion, it could be viewed as one. The song is about being jealous and angry at the new girl/guy that your ex is with. You know that you're better, and he/she did the wrong thing by ****ing up your relationship and ending it. He/she will most likely realize soon that you're the one for him/her even when they think they're over you. It's a conceited break-up/independence anthem.

▲ Round 2: Anthem ▼ Youth
Adolescence. Every artist has dealt with this topic, but few have made it engaging enough to have the title of anthem.
I chose the topic of youthfulness to be the common thread in my trinity because youth is what an anthem is all about. It's in the moment, it's loud, it's fun, and most importantly, relatable.
Nicki Minaj - "Young Forever"
Young Forever is an album track of Nicki's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, but it's not deserving to just be that. To some, it may seem to be juat another throwaway Pop track, but this is the definition of a youth anthem. The lyrics are telling listeners to appreciate life while you have it, because we don't know when life will end. The chorus in this song is massive, with lyrics that are easy to sing along with and appreciate at the same time. Nicki struck anthem gold with this one.
Foxes - "Youth"
This is literally a youth anthem. The lyrics are so relatable, it's scary. If anyone has ever felt scared about growing up, this song is perfect. Foxes sings about talking about embracing the ambiguity of everything that comes along with being young, and appreciating it while she has it. The message speaks loud and clear to all audiences, which translates into a stellar anthem.
fun. - "We Are Young"
Everyone has heard this song. Everyone has sung along. That alone makes it anthem, but it's not just it's mass popularity that makes it an anthem. The melody in the song is uplifting, and empowers people to live in the moment. While I'm sure there are more clever ways of talking about this topic, fun manages to combine both relatable lyrics and a anthemic sound that will prove to last for ages.

1. Selena Gomez - Birthday
It's my birthday as I'm writing this (on Monday January 13th), so it was only right that I included a birthday anthem in this special anthem-themed trinity. This song, while it may be a little bit cheesy and overproduced, is just so catchy and fun that whenever your birthday rolls around or when you just want to throw a house party, this song can be added to the playlist and you can just shout the lyrics out while you're getting drunk and wasted or just dancing your ass off.
2. Icona Pop - I Love It
The most anthemic EDM break-up song you can think of. The lyrics of this song are just so in your face and descriptive. How can you forget lyrics like "You're from the seventies, but I'm a nineties bitch" or "I DON'T CARE, I LOVE IT"? You just can't. Perfect for blasting in your car as well and an anthem that gets your hands up at a concert.
3. Simple Plan - Generation
My favorite song from their self-titled third studio album ever since I bought it in 2008. This song can literally appeal to any generation of kids from my generation to the generation next and the generation afterwards and so forth. Because this song literally has all the feelings kids and teenagers feel about all the adults that tell them what they should and shouldn't be and so this song will be an anthem for kids, teens and even young adults for years to come, even if it is only an album track.

The Reckless and The Brave
All Time Low "looking out at a town called Suburbia, everybody's just fighting to fit in"
This song is a straight out anthem. It's basically for ya'll crazy nuts who won't give up till they achieve what they want. To be honest, I don't find much connection between songs and my life. Like, I don't feel empowered or whatever by songs most of the time. However I do like it when songs mirror my life. I must say sometimes I'm really reckless (not brave though I'm a wuss) but yeah I think it's a really defining quality so **** whatever people think of that.
Another lyric goes "my song has not been sung, so long live us" which is just so meaningful. It's basically saying that I will eventually make my mark on this world, so watch out bitches cos I'm coming and I won't give up till I get there.
Lost In The World (feat. Bon Iver)
Kanye West "i'm lost in the world, i'm down on my line, i'm new in the city, and i'm down for the night"
If I'm a stan for Taylor, why am I using a Kanye song? Ok anyway, this song probably isn't supposed to be interpreted as an anthem and I think it's about finding some girl that is your everything and then you **** her ("If we die in each others arms we still get laid in our afterlife"). Okay anyway, what I think of this song is that you're in a new place and of course you're lost cos you're new. But it doesn't matter, you're still gonna get DOWNN and have a good time.
It's also rather applicable to my personal life, cos last year I got into a new school and the environment is vastly different and it can get a little unsettling. I was rather lost. But y'know what they say, you gotta make the best out of everything so yep. Getting DOWNNNN every night to study.
Final Warning
Skylar Grey "i'm going to the kitchen and coming back with a knife, cos i've had enough this time"
So, how in the world is this morbid song about killing your lover an anthem? I don't condone violence of course, but I think this is sort of empowering in the sense that you should stand up to whoever's doing you wrong. It doesn't have to be your lover, this person could be your friend or anyone. Instead of being submissive, Skylar is standing up to this violent bastard. She's being assertive even though she's the woman. Stand up against the assholes in your life.
I think I'm quite a submissive person though so I should probably heed my own advice Dear Skylar please make more violent anthems next time!

WHITNEY HOUSTON ♦ I LOOK TO YOU
A true anthem by our beloved Whitney Houston, it might not be the biggest hit from Whitney, but it's lyrics, and meaning truly makes it an anthem. It's such a powerful and deep song. This song gives strength, hope and faith. We all make mistakes in our lifes, and some of of us die with them. We all aren't perfect, but we were never meant to be perfect, God made us to do mistakes, and only him can forgive us for them. Only him can show us the way we have to go in our lifes.
CHRISTINA AGUILERA ♦ BEAUTIFUL
Another anthem is by Christina Aguilera. I'm not the biggest fan of Christina, but I will not lie this song is truly an anthem. Christina inspires us to believe in ourselves. This world is cruel, very cruel. A lot of people laugh at others appearances, they call people fat, ugly, disgusting, and other words, which I don't really wanna say. Everybody is beautiful, there isn't such thing as an ugly person, everybody is beautiful, and if people can't see that, they must be rotten inside. Some people don't realise how hard words can hit, they just struck like lightning, people are easily hurt. People who make fun of other should firstly look at themselves. I'm glad Christina made this song, she just gives people hope, and makes them feel better and stronger.
LOS DEL RIO ♦ MACARENA
14 weeks at number #1 on Billboard Hot 100. Macarena by Los Del Rio is a huge hit from 20th century. One of the most popular songs of all time. It's catchy, very silly, and simple song. You can easily sing along to this, it's just such a fun song. I think that this is an anthem, because big amount of people know this song, it's just such a big hit. Also music video is very fun. Everything about this song is just right, it has everything that catchy song needs, the catchy chorus, silly video, and fun instrumental. Everything about this song is just good!

***Nicki Minaj//Boss Ass Bitch
Talk about a ratchet girl anthem ! Nicki is back at it again with her strong flow and raunchy lyrics. You just gotta pop the pu$$y one time! Especially if you a Boss Ass Bitch. If you need a little help that no worries either! Nicki actually gives you steps for all the bashful ones. So for all you rowdy ones, this is for you.
***Missy Elliott ft. Ciara//Lose Control
Like the title, this song makes you lose control. This old school party jam will have you bopping all around the house, car, whatever! The incredible beat to this song will make you delirious. Whenever I hear this song I feel like krumping because hip hop influences fused with this song.
***Beyonce//Ring the Alarm
This song is emotionally high powered but a delightful listen. Bey is constantly ranting an assault in the song which makes me exhilarated. Anyone can relate to this song if a partner is cheating, or at least suspected to be. If you're not feeling too hot and you want to take your anger out, feel free to give this a listen. Bey's rage and quavering vocals will soothe your aching heart as it seems she is experiencing the same thing.

I love the way this song just makes me forget everything that's been worrying me and just embrace the now. This song is an Anthem because of its message: to indulge in the joys of the present and look forward to a future thats almost always bright.
Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) By Kelly Clarkson
This song is a reminder that we can emerge from times of loneliness and despondency feeling stronger than ever. This song is an Anthem because it preaches positivity and like my previous song, tells people to let go of their present troubles and look forward to the brighter future.
Falling By HAIM
I chose this iconic masterpiece as the showstopper of my trinity because it tells us to never give up and instills the motivation and empowerment needed to succeed. This song is an Anthem because it is a realization of the brighter future/outcome promised in the two previous songs and celebrates perseverance and determination in overcoming obstacles to achieve goals and dreams.

Katy Perry // Roar
This song, for me, was probably the best song of 2013. It just had this powerful vibe where, when I would hear it, I would get so amped. Also, this came out at the most perfect time because I was about to go to college, and I kinda needed this confidence boost in my life, so this song gave me the best pick-me-up and shot of confidence before I left. In essence, it became an anthem for me and probably a lot of other people for people to show their true selves without anyone telling them elsewise.
David Guetta // Titanium (feat. Sia)
When I first heard this song, I was amazed that really powerful lyrics could be put into a dance song. I love this song because it's an anthem that nothing can get you down, no matter what anyone says about it. Also, I think it's a great song because of the fact that it tells you to be yourself because nothing anyone says should get to you since you're "titanium."
Jessie J // Who You Are
"Who You Are" is an anthem for everyone to be themselves and to never lose who you are in the midst of something different. I love this song because of its great message to be yourself and to basically own that.

Martina McBride - This One's For The Girls
When I saw that the theme for this round was 'Anthem', this is the first song that came to mind. This classic 2003 country single by Martina McBride is the anthem for girls and women of all ages. In the song she touches on a variety of different stages in life - from being 13 and dealing with drama in high school, to being 25 struggling to make it on your own, and even addresses being 42 and wanting to look young again.
"This one's for the girls
Who've ever had a broken heart
Who've wished upon a shooting star
You're beautiful the way you are."
JoJo - Sexy To Me
"Mind ✔, Body ✔, My Sensuality ✔
Car keys, and my paycheck. Now I'm ready."
Newly single and depressed? Looking for a way to get motivated again? Look no further than this holy bop by Ms. JoJo. "Sexy To Me" is an absolute banger with a great message - you don't need someone on your arm to feel sexy.
"I don't need nobody cause I'm sexy to me.
You keep doin' you tonight cause I'm doin' me."
Kelly Clarkson - You Can't Win
The song I connect with the most in this trinity, Kelly Clarkson's song "You Can't Win" which should've been a single instead of Dark Side expresses the frustrations that many people have with not finding the right words to say, not doing the right thing, or being unable to find your place in the world no matter how hard you try.
"And you try, you try so hard
But it's wearing on your heart
And you play, you play the game
But you pay, you pay for it
You can't win, no."
It was inevitable for me to include a typical “sassy” song by a female vocalist, but I had to make sure I chose the right one. The more obvious pop options don’t do it for me when I hear a word like “anthem” but this song really hits the right places. The lyrics and the perfect delivery of each line make me feel like a king without bordering into cringeworthy and that to me is the perfect anthem.
Sleigh Bells
Comeback Kid
Some people just hear noise when they hear a Sleigh Bells song, but when I hear this song I hear a great message that motivates me. It’s a pretty simple song, but whenever I feel defeated, this is the song I play to pick myself up again and the lyrics especially speak to me. In fact, the instrumental alone is powerful enough to be considered a true anthem. It’s loud, strong and aggressive; the perfect ingredients.
AlunaGeorge
Lost & Found
AlunaGeorge are my everything and have been for a year now. I could easily have picked any of their songs and passed them off as anthems to me but I went with this because I love the way it oozes of attitude and I feel like it’s a perfect, cleverly written “**** you” anthem. It’s got a sense of humour to it that for me differentiates it from others of the type.

I've always found Ke$ha's Dirty Love to be the takeaway song from Warrior. In some ways a hardcore version of Single Ladies, the song is an anthem for inner desires and cheap thrills.
I Love It embodies confidence and the ability to move forward. Everyone has a dark time in their life that feels overwhelming and endless, and I Love It is the anthem for discovering the light at the end of the tunnel and leaving it in the past.

Sons&Daughters
The Decemberists
Sons&Daughters is the epic swan song from the Decemberists' album The Crane Wife. This album - and especially this song - makes me feel an overwhelming sense of nostalgia like no other. The song itself is about starting over again in a new place, a message which could basically summarize my life. As a young child I was violent, angry, tear-filled and stubborn. I would constantly get in fights and was overly narcissistic. When my family moved I reflected back on those years of my life and realized a change had to happen. This new place was my perfect opportunity to make change and since then I have endeavored to be the nicest, most considerate person I can. Listening to this song reminds me of overcoming all my past issues and leaving it all behind. And indeed, in time, my bombs did fade away.
StareIntoTheSun
Graffiti6
If you know me, you know I care too much. I'm always stressing over something and I've never been anything but uptight. "Relax" isn't exactly a word in my vocabulary. Graffiti6's fun, soulful StareIntoTheSun is one of my anthems, however, because it's about precisely what I never do; shake everything off and simply not care. If I'm getting worried about something as small as homework or as large as depression I can select this song, press play and be reminded that it's just life and life is meant to be enjoyed. There's no points in sitting around moping when you don't have forever. The song may wander quite a bit on the loss of love but the second line of the chorus says it all "Guess I lose, but life goes on".
UnitedStatesofEurasia
Muse
There's a lovely feeling I get when, for every word of a song I hear, I can think "That's nothing but the truth!" UnitedStatesofEurasia is one of those songs. Every single lyric I just want to scream from the rooftops. I want to tell everyone, "You have to know this! This is important!" At any given moment on this planet war is ensuing. People are dying for causes they may not even agree with. I've been known to be a peacemaker among people. I can't stand to see people fight and to have people hate each other. This song preaches that ideal on a wide scale that I feel is immensely representative of my opinions and ideals.
johnsuxx
Xtina - Fighter
this was my first thought. it's like the epitome of anthems for me, and i love the message in it that you shouldn't let someone tear you down, but you should use the pain to build yourself back up, become better and be a - well, fighter.
Dixie Chicks - Not Ready to Make Nice
due to the controversy the band got for what Natalie said about the President, I've always thought this was an anthem for standing up for what you believe in no matter what. They put their careers on the line by releasing this song and not being sorry for what was said, and that's admirable and the song kind of empowers you to stay true to yourself and your own morals.
**** like you - feminist anthem that never was. i think it's a kind of smart song in that it's not smart - the lyrics aren't deep, but they're unfiltered and 100% true about the stupid double standards surrounding women and sex in today's society. i love that the lyrics are so explicit about making the guy the object in the song, because that's a stark contrast to most "sex songs" released today.
also kinda empowers you to go out and get laid too

Charli XCX - Superlove
This song has all of the properties of an anthem to me: a fun, neo-happy beat, tongue in cheek lyrics, and an explosive chorus. What makes the song an anthem to me is just the way the words flow together, and those two little handclaps before the chorus bursts into life. Not only is it a song to rock out in the car to with friends, It's a song that you can use alone just to make yourself feel like you're in a Sofia Coppola film, something everyone needs every once and a while.
MGMT - Electric Feel
The only phrase that comes to mind when I think of this song is "sex anthem." What I appreciate so much about this song is the fact that the sex is so subtle. It's the kind of song that you hear blasting over the speakers as you catch eyes with a girl across the floor - except you're not sure she wants you - it's a dangerous task you're willing to try. The whole uncertainty and underlying danger of the experience is what makes this such a "hook-up-with-a-stranger" anthem.
Ellie Goulding - Explosions
For me, Explosions serves as an example of lost love. While the song isn't anthemic in nature, the part where the drums come in is elevating, and not to be cliché - explosive. Explosions is an anthem to me because it represents everything that I've ever gained and lost being in love with a person, even though it's only happened once. Explosions takes me to a place of confidence - after a bad relationship - where I can look back and say that it might not have been entirely my fault.
