If the public votes for change in the plebiscite the liberals have promised, very high. And considering gay marriage support is up in the 70s according to polling we should have no trouble winning the plebiscite, the right wing can cry all they like.

Marriage Equality Australia says the votes are there for it to pass no matter what, the question is how it'll come about. If it'll be a free vote like a regular bill or if there will be a plebiscite first.

Labor and Greens outnumber the Liberals in the Senate so they could block the plebiscite which they described as a waste of time and could instead call for a bill to be approved normally.

I hope the plebiscite is blocked. Such a waste of time and money. We already know Australia's consensus is for it to be legalised, and the parliament are under no obligation to legalise it even if and when a plebiscite returns a 'yes' majority. It's just drawing it out and taking funds from other more important/costly issues.

I'll be in Canada when we find out who our new PM is, if it's still Malcolm Turnbull I might just stay there tbh.

I'm trying to but this is literally dystopian future ****. I can't believe it's this lineball. I'm Tasmanian and we only have 5 seats but 4/5 seats went to Labor, the other an Independant. We know the tea. I just don't get what the rest of Australia, particularly QLD and WA, are thinking giving the Libs such a high percentage of the vote? They've been nothing but a mess since Tony Abbott became our PM.

This. They might "not care about politics" but I'm sure they care about some of the policies and how it will affect them. And that could be the difference between getting a government who are going to make those changes that benefit them or not.

In other news, a Liberal senator has claimed that if LNC maintains government, there'll be "no hurry" to even hold the plebiscite and that while it shouldn't get dumped, they'd have to take other issues more seriously and “not get sidetracked by trendy issues” aka marriage equality aka legally enforcing the equal human rights of all Australian citizens to get married. It's basically their answer to, "How can we make it LOOK like we care about getting same-sex marriage legalised in order to keep votes from people who care about that BUT also demonstrate we really have no intention whatsoever of getting it done to keep the homophobe votes?"

Even tho I don't trust Malcolm/the Liberals he did promise to hold the plebiscite before the years end and honestly considering his electorate+the media attention SSM gets if we go down that path it will be sooner rather than later.

Still think the Liberals will narrowly win but the internal fighting has already begun and with Labor reenergised+Bill probs staying on as leader it will help Labor in the long run

Status of the plebiscite is anyones guess tbh.

Sure Bill + Greens + crossbench could say to Malcolm that they won't pass the required legislation for a plebiscite in the lower or upper, but then Malcolm could very well turn around and say fine, no gay marriage anything this term. Of course he could alternatively just give up and do a free vote, which would finally end this issue (it would almost definitely pass both houses) which he would like. The right wing would go nuts though, and to be completely honest if he did that, ScoMo could very well use that as a trigger to challenge for the leadership in which case bye-bye any hope of SSM before 2019 or even nightmare scenario of a referendum which would very easily fail.

This is all hypothetical though. I still think Libs will just scrape in with 76 when all is said and done and a plebiscite will be held later in the year. My only concern at this point is the wording of the question, how long between its announcement and the vote, and whether or not it is compulsory. If it's not compulsory you run the risk of a large amount of soft-yes people staying home thinking it's a done deal, when you just know every church goer over 50 will be on church-organised busses taking them to the polling places to vote en-mass no, which could make it close.

I've been shading my friends and family so hard who voted for either The Liberal Party or Pauline Hanson. I've been saying stuff like "Oh, you're against my rights? It was fun knowing you" and just being petty, and not replying to their messages Concerning my family, I just flat out called them morons and told them I'm going to marry someone so they'll be my new family Don't fucc wit me cuz!
