So I want to ask some of you out of curiosity. How did you get into kpop in the first place?
For me I was always open to music of other langauges especially korean since I had family friends who were korean.
Well I'd always liked European-language music but my first exposure to K-pop was when I used to use another forum years ago and some people on there were getting into Big Bang and 2NE1. I think this was, like, around late 2009. At first I was I'm ashamed to say quite ignorant towards it and brushed it off as a weird fad and thought nothing of it. Then 6-or-so months later Taeyang's Where U At came up on my Recommended Videos feed on Youtube, I watched it, liked it, and gradually I discovered more Big Bang and 2NE1 videos from there so I'd say they were like my earliest faves.
Then, long story short, I heard Mirotic and basically everything changed and the rest is history.

My late friend was a wonder girls stan who helped me out since I was looking for something new music wise.
Then I came to this thread and you guys really helped a bunch and really solidified my love for the genre.
I've been into jpop since about late 2006. Around 2008 I was on a jpop blog and downloaded Younha's "Someday" album not knowing it was Korean music. Fell in love with her song "memory", but I still wasn't fully into kpop yet.
I forgot how, but some months later in 2009 I watched 2NE1's "fire" Mv and just thought it was the hottest thing ever. Not too long after I started visiting allkpop and downloading music. I still was on the fence about kpop until I heard BEG's "Sign"..after that I got hooked on BEG and kpop.
When I was like 14 (this was back in like 2006) I used to post on a Jpop forum and I saw a thread about a Korean singer stealing one of Britney's songs so I looked Hyori up and I liked some of her other songs I, from there I found more artists I liked. I used to love Bae Seulki and the first group I really liked was WG after they debuted and my friend showed me Irony but then Tell Me came out my life was never the same
I used youtube as well as a guide to see what would stick. I feel that music is universal it doesn't matter if it's in another language music is something that can be felt and understood if you enjoy it.
I think it really depends on how open minded you are.
It only seems weird because English has become the standard.
You never see anyone ask why people in other countries listen to our western faves when it's in english.
It's basically the same as people who listen to EDM and hardstyle etc. where they don't sing in the song. For me it's about the rhytm, the vibe you get from a song and artist. Good and understandable lyrics aren't a must for me, but they're always a plus, of course.
I remember when I Got a Boy came out at the beginning of 2013 and I really liked it. I downloaded a couple of SNSD songs, but never really listened to them, only a few, like Genie, Oh! and I Got a Boy. I downloaded their full discography but never bothered to branch out from the three+ songs I listened to.
One day in the summer JungleDisturbia played me Dream Girl when we had a plug.dj session and I was like "woah". Then I started youtube-ing SHINee and listening to all their bops and well, here we are, they're now my favourite artist.

Understandable lyrics are definitely a plus I agree but some can't look past lyrics and just feel the music. Like I think Work Bitch is horrible lyrics wise but I enjoy it because the beat is fun and I can tolerate it.

It's crazy how fast 2NE1 became my all-time favourite artists and that I will love them more and more with every new release, interview and performance
I got into K-pop quite randomly actually, 2NE1's I Am The Best had been playing
on some random youtube video i was watching and I was just so addicted to the song I went on a thirsty ass hunt for it on youtube I couldn't find it at first but sushi's Bad Girl came up during my search for the song and I called them complete copycats for a while which led me to their RDR video and me being slow thought snsd were just 3 members with a bunch of different looks in a video
Eventually I found I Am The Anthem thanks to my Malaysian friend and the from there my other friend help me through the process of getting into K-pop through Jo Kween
When I searched K-pop at first, I stumbled across I Am the Best and Fantastic Baby and completely disputed the genre because I thought they were both so terrible.

Gotta love how most of you got into K-Pop because of 2NE1's ANTHEM
I got into it because of their other anthem, Fire. I thought, "Who are these high budget popstars? Why do they slay everything I've seen up to now? And why aren't they more known?"
Then I googled, was very impressed it was their first video [aside from Lollipop and cameos obviously] and the rest is history! But yes, either way, 2NE1 stay appealing

Back when the performances were good and the music listenable.
