I don't think anyone realized but not using the mod is way better. Every year the popularity for the genres changes. One year Gospel was super popular and all these gospel artist came out of nowhere and slayed.With the Mod POP is always the #1 genre. Like in my game POP is more popular in EU and AS than the US. Which is why my US artist is slaying overseas. Also, it depends on which theme you used for the album.

The secret is being successful in Europe. Rainey gets 1~2m sales from there and the usual 4~5m from the USA.
And the quality of your songs too.

Rainey is pop country and she is from the USA. Her sales are only average in Latin America and in Japan.

Pop Country tends to do well in Japan. That's what I gathered from my last play through with Pop Country legend Serena Moon.

Rainey sold 75.3 million records WW. 1.3 million came from Japan  She sold more in Australia ( 1.7 million) and in Canada ( 2.6 million) and they are smaller markets.
Seems like she didn't breakthrough there like the rest of the world.

Love Songs
Release your album or singles just before the Season Trends. If you want to release for summer, schedule the release for the end of may. For fall, schedule the release at the end of September . For a big boost in Sales WW, release Mid or End of November. Release ballads or love songs in Feb.

Lead singles I promote for the whole month, the rest just in the release week. If the song is flopping, then I book a lot of promo spots.
