I've given Lana's album 4 spins. Still think it's trash. It's as bad as Coldplay's failed concept album, Mylo Xyloto.

Have y'all read Kellie Pickler's interview with EW ( here)? It's very interesting to read. Taylor needs to take notes from her. Also, the comment box alone is quite funny. The Carrie Underwood fans called Taylor as a sell-out when the Kellie fans & Country traditionalist are calling Carrie out for singing thrown away Pop songs. Just funny that they chose to point their fingers on others just to defend their own fave. Pathetic.

As for Kellie, I agree that it's a shame that she lost her record deal with Sony Nashville after making her best album (and a genuinely good album in its own right). But I think it's naive to blame her album's failure to capture mass attention on the lack of promotion. She had several high profile television performances during the week of her album's release in addition to a strong internet presence, and she also had the chance to perform an album track on American Idol a few months after her album was released. Despite the size of the Idol audience, 100 Proof sold about 2,000 copies the week following. For whatever reason (and I don't believe this is a reflection on the quality of the music), Kellie singing these songs didn't connect. More on that in a moment.
Sony Nashville poured plenty of promotion into the lead single "Tough." I saw week after week of ads for "Tough" in trades, and Kellie crisscrossed the country on a radio promo tour. But it stalled after making the top-30 despite all of the promotion. I also saw several large trade ads for "100 Proof" when it finally impacted radio in April. But that still didn't motivate more than thirty stations on the Mediabase panel to add the song.
I will grant that label issues did have a negative influence from a timing standpoint. Postponing the release of Kellie's album from its original October release was a mistake -- she had a relatively high profile at the time thanks to a 90210 performance and an appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show, and perhaps those would have resulted in a few thousand more sales in those early weeks. Kellie's album was no doubt further delayed by changes at the top of Sony Nashville, and the more than three year gap between her sophomore album and third album certainly did nothing for her position at country radio. I will also grant that releasing an album without a single on the radio virtually guaranteed that the album would struggle after the first few weeks of sales to Kellie's core fanbase. Moreover, I can agree that not releasing "100 Proof" to major markets until April was likely the by-product of a busy Sony release schedule in which Kellie was nowhere near the top priority.
But would country radio have gotten on board with Kellie in any circumstance? Personally, I don't think so. She released "Tough" to radio when there was a dearth of solo females with singles out. In fact, the only other female artist from Sony Nashville with a current single at the time was Sara Evans (which somewhat undercuts the lack of promotion argument). If it were a simple matter of limited slots for females at country radio, "Tough" should have had an easier time.
Like I said earlier, it's not as if Sony Nashville didn't make visible efforts to promote the song. Although the current radio environment is rather unfriendly to traditional country, I don't believe Kellie would be seeing better results with poppier music, either. It's not as if "Tough" or "100 Proof" were that traditional, anyway. I think that Kellie simply had no momentum by the time she released new music to a marketplace that is now incredibly crowded, she hadn't established herself as a unique presence on country radio through two albums (I said this at the time and I stand by it -- the direction of her sophomore album was a mistake), and she suffered from the perception at country radio that her sales and relevance would show the same downward trend that most Idol alumni have experienced.
It's not impossible to sell a good number of albums and downloads without country airplay -- Pistol Annies have done just that recently, though I'm sure Miranda Lambert's presence in the group has helped. But I think that Kellie's music operates under the shadow of her personality. Part of the problem for her in the eyes of the masses is that her singles haven't quite captured what makes her a star. On the flip side, she hadn't developed a reputation as someone who deserves to be taken seriously for her music, so much of the target audience for her current album was accustomed to dismissing her. The bottom line is that I don't think the label is fully at fault for what was an insurmountably steep uphill battle for 100 Proof.
The good news is that Kellie is finally out there as someone with a musical viewpoint, and will be able to solidify and build on that reputation with more performances and another album in this direction. Those things should make it easier for her to find her target market regardless of the label responsible for promotion. I would like to see her make traditional country songs with a modern viewpoint (this would address what I felt was a weakness on 100 Proof -- the perspective of several of the key tracks felt dated). In the meantime, the very star quality that has overshadowed Kellie's music will help to keep her visible as she works out the logistics of her next musical move. She'll be fine.

Here we see Nashville's problem with traditional country again. Radio doesn't play it. I hope Taylor will change this in the future.
