A Los Angeles man was arrested last month after he tried to fill a forged prescription at a Newbury Park pharmacy, officials said Thursday.
An investigation into Michael Shapiro, 37, began in early August when authorities were notified by a Newbury Park pharmacy about Shapiro’s forged prescription for controlled substances, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said.
Detectives learned that Shapiro had passed 160 forged prescriptions in the past year for hydrocodone, Xanax, Ritalin and Ambien, police said. Shapiro also had extensive knowledge of prescription drugs and graduated from Yale medical school but did not obtain a physician’s license, officials said.
Authorities served search warrants about 2:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at two places in Los Angeles County where Shapiro was living and found hundreds of blank and filled out fraudulent prescriptions as well as prescription drugs, officials said. There was also evidence that Shapiro was manufacturing prescription forms, police said.
Shapiro was arrested in connection with forging prescriptions and commercial burglary and booked into county jail. He is due in Ventura County Superior Court Sept. 10, officials said.
The Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit investigated the case, police said.
