The ignorance. It's called football because it was played on foot, as opposed to the rich sports that were played on horses. Same reason why "rugby" is called "rugby football." And no, it's not a fact. The word soccer originated in England (as
sociation football) to differentiate it from rugby football. They stopped calling it soccer and referred to it as football when it became the most popular sport. Countries where rugby is the most popular sport is where it's known as football (USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, and many parts of SA and Ireland). You're welcome for the lesson.
