Taylor Swift brings her almighty Red tour to London's O2 - music review
Featuring a dozen dancers, more fireworks than Katy Perry and two hydraulic stages, Red is the consummate 21st-century event
Unquestionably the most popular pop star on the planet, Taylor Swift brought her all-conquering, all-singing-and-dancing, almighty Red tour to the O2 over the weekend. Those who wondered why the 24-year-old, Nashville-based, Pennsylvania-born stockbroker's daughter has eclipsed Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and the rest need wonder no more.
Taylor Swift may have been named after Seventies songwriter James Taylor, but with more than 35 million Twitter followers and having sold 75 million song downloads in addition to her 26 million albums, she is the consummate 21st-century star and, featuring a dozen dancers, more fireworks than Katy Perry and two hydraulic stages, Red is the consummate 21st-century event.
Never overwhelmed by the visual feast around her, Swift charged through the crowd during 22; belted out Sparks Fly from a tiny moving plinth 30ft above the crowd and her inclusive charisma was thrown into sharp focus when she duetted with an awkward Sam Smith (Ed Sheeran had guested on Saturday) on his spry Money On My Mind.
Although she changed outfits at the drop of a hat-pin, the chaste Swift wisely bared little flesh other than her lengthy legs and you suspect she would confess to being a card-carrying communist before she would swear on stage.
The teenage girls who formed the heart of her banner-waving, dressed-up audience howled along to the anti-bullying Mean – "all you are is mean and a liar and pathetic" – with blood-curdling relish. Between songs, she plumped for brazen flattery ("there are a lot of creative people in London and many of them are here tonight": presumably she meant One Direction's Niall Horan, who attended on post-knee-surgery crutches), fireside chats about her songwriting process and agony aunt bromides.
Mercifully, Swift's songs matched their setting. Like Shania Twain, she's found worldwide acclaim after erasing her early country leanings, but We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together was a glittering finale; I Knew You Were Trouble flirted with dubstep and All Too Well suggested real depth. More tellingly still, the breadth of ideas, the invention and the sharp songwriting confirmed Taylor Swift as Madonna's less sexualised, less needy heiress.

Taylor Swift, gig review: 'Overblown pop from a genuine talent'
It's not really country. It's pop. Overblown, gaudy pop, with a huge band, multi-level stages, numerous outfit changes (mostly sparkly) and a troupe of dancers, played out in front of a sea of glow batons and riotous shrills. It's more Bonnie Tyler than Patsy Cline and every utterance and movement feels choreographed.
However, Taylor Swift's Red Tour is a compelling spectacle and the multi-millionaire is a genuine talent and an adroit lyricist. The 24-year-old songwriter knows her market and London (or “Fundon”) loves her. It feels like a US election rally or an evangelist meeting. Her faithful, ostensibly teenage girls (the bar areas are almost entirely empty), know - and sing - every word of her (mostly) heartbreak numbers.
“You can take me down with just one single blow,” maintains America's sweetheart on one of tonight's highlights “Mean”. It’s doubtful any meanie could flatten this willowy force of nature. Taylor might have been subjected to some spiteful barbs for losing out (and head-banging to “All Too Well”, which she does again here) at the Grammy's and she’s under an intense media glare for her famous exes (Harry Styles, John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal etc) but what’s obvious is that Swift is a gifted musician. She plays the banjo, guitar and piano for pity’s sake. She is “so money” as Vince Vaughn's Trent would say in Swingers.
This is the first of the Nashville-based artist's five O2 dates and the set mainly focuses on numbers from her fourth album, the mega-selling Red. It's her strongest record yet and full of lyrical zingers such as “I’ve loved in shades of wrong“ on "State of Grace" and "I'm really gonna miss you picking fights" on the fearsomely addictive "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together".
Swift has been knocked for (sort of) naming and shaming former lovers in her songs - but it's always been so. Also see Dylan, Cohen and Lennon. Male songwriters have always done it.
Every song seems to signal another costume change (Union Jack top, Marie Antoinette garb, scarlet cape dress etc) and sometimes the choreography, endless catwalk-model strutting, lengthy pre-song preambles (“No matter how hard you try you can't make someone like you if they don't and that's okay”) and fireworks do seem like a fearful faff and we could have done without the home footage of Swift performing from infancy to adulthood before the winsome “22”.
However, Swift's committed song delivery and obvious charisma carry us through the cheese. And on “You Belong with Me” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” she recalls the likes of Sister Sledge and The Supremes. Perfect, perky pop.
The screams are a constant but they go up a few notches with the introduction of Swift's new bestie mate, Ed Sheeran, who delivers a charming version of “Lego House”. She sweetly lets the Suffolk singer take centre stage - which is very un-diva like.
Swift, despite losing out at the Grammy's, is clearly at the top of her game and could well be at the pinnacle of her fame, which is always an intoxicating thing to witness. Her time is now.

Her pinnacle?! Not them predicting Taylor's downfall, when LP5 doesn't sell 1 million in its first week

i don't know if it's been mentioned before, but the biggest problem with Lord headlining the super bowl has nothing to do with her fanbase/demographic or whatever perception the public has of her. the biggest problem is that it's the PEPSI half time show. taylor is the face of diet coke, and as long as she is that, they will NEVER let her headline a pepsi sponsored event! next year Coke has the broadcasting rights for the Super Bowl, but Pepsi has a deal with the NFL itself to be the sponsor for the halftime show (which is so lucrative that they wont give that up for many years to come), so if coke is the televised event's main sponsor, there is no way pepsi (or coke for that matter) would let Lord headline the pepsi event. JT, Katy, or Rihanna are coming for super bowl 2015

She's not huge worldwide, but she's definitely big. The main problem with her sales is not that she's irrelevant worldwide, it's that she's too huge in the US that her local sales tend to eclipse her WW ones. Not a big problem though #FullOnPopLPComing #HideYourFaves #RhennaWho

Welcome Florencia!
I think the most surprising thing that I ever experienced was listening to WANEGBT. I mean since I missed the entire chat because I was out of station, when I came back I saw that she had already released her singles and the album name and artwork was already out. By the artwork I thought it would be a very serious and mature album (not that the album is not mature). And WANEGBT was the immediate next song released by her after Safe And Sound and Eyes Open. So I expected some song with deep lyrics and beautiful melodies, something like Mine. But when I first heard WANEGBT, I was like 'No Taylor, I mean seriously what's the real single!? Don't fool us with this Katy Perry cover'. But after 2-3 listens (of the country version), I was sure that it was gonna hit #1 which it eventually did. It actually was a good choice for a summer smash.
Just imagine if Taylor really mentioned the name of the indie album 'which is cooler than hers' in WANEGBT. I can't even imagine how much it sales will shoot up as all the Taylor fans would buy it, just to burn and destroy it and that no other person listens to the album.
Hey I was thinking that it would be really good if Taylor released two lead singles at the same time- one for pop and one for country/rock/alternative or vice versa. In that way she would be able to balance both the genre fans. I agree that the sales of the singles will have to face a bit damage but it will shoot up the album sales which actually at the end of the day really matters.

Yes. Her US sales are so huge that she sold 1.2 million first week there alone. Prism hasn't even reached that target and it's 12 weeks old already and on it's third single. It will take Katy 19 weeks by my estimate, to surpass Taylor's opening week for Red!
