I'm glad she took a risk with a ballad as a lead single, but Hard is obviously the better choice. I think it would have altered the era significantly and RR would have sold a lot more. Especially if Rude Boy was coming off a smash and then smashed itself.

A lot of this is wishful thinking, I guess we'll never know. Then again, if Hard smashed and Rated R did a lot better, we would have never gotten Loud to get Rihanna on the public's good side again. Such a double edged sword.

Idk, the song is too urban to be a crossover hit.

And IMO, Fire Bomb should have been the lead single. The era would have been much more successful if that was the case.

Didn't it go Top 10? I think the anticipation of "what's Rihanna going to release next?" combined with the upbeat and clear "I don't give a ****, the incident doesn't define me" attitude would have sent it to #1.

Just barely.

RR was way too emo. Fire Bomb is obviously more commercial and radio friendly. Not to mention it's an album favorite. The general public would have ate it up. It's a shame she didn't release it as a single.

Okay, I still don't think FB is more commercial than RR. I think FB would have flopped harder than RR, tbh. It's an album favourite amongst the fans because it's one of her most personal tracks and one of her best tracks, lyrically. Well, that's why I like it, I assume it's why others like it, too. I can't imagine the public ever being here for FB.

Russian Roulette is way too slow for the radio in my opinion but FB doesn't fit for lead single too. Hard is indeed the perfect choice but it wouldn't go to the top spot. You all forget one critical factor that blocked Run This Town and Bad Romance from getting #1 - Black Eyed Peas and their I Gotta Feeling.

I feel like FB could have at least done better than RR given the situation that she was in at that time (a la Katy's Part of Me). Hard would've been inappropriate.
