Radio does greatly influence iTunes, the thing is though, radio doesn't necessarily play what people are interested in. If it became how it used to be and was more focused on the listener and requests it wouldn't be so bad. Now it's based on money.

Radio has the extent of the influence it should have chart wise. Part of the reason Billboard has a monopoly on charts in the US is because they have all the airplay data. There is no competition for this kind of data. If they take airplay out of the equation then anyone can come up with their own version of the Billboard charts.
