100. Second Chance - the song I always go back to on the album (other than CDWY). stands out because of the female vocals.
98. 7/11 - Yes.
95. Boom Clap - sacred simplicity
92. Baby Don't Lie - Just missed my countdown, not gonna lie
91. Rattlesnake - The perfect album opener for that album
88. Supernatural - I didn't even know AG had a new song out LOL. So embarrassed.
80. Crying for No Reason - inspired by the other Katy with her generic lyrics.
79. Girls Chase Boys - Used to hear this song all the time but didn't know the name or artist. Thank u.
75. Gunshot - Yes. Hope there's more Lykke.
74. Be My Baby - Only AG song? Please reconsider for Break Free.
73. Artifice - Yes, on mine too.
One of the more 'out there' tracks on my list. I love the muffled vocals and the dark twisted instrumental. Its quite different from the more ballad-oriented feel of the album but works in its own way.
69 A: Jeremih (feat. YG) S: "Don't Tell 'Em"
To see a Hip Hop/R&B song cross-over into Canadian Pop radio is a sight almost unheard of. Somehow, "Don't Tell 'Em" did it and I thoroughly enjoyed it much to my surprise. I think its almost all due to DJ Mustard.
68 A: Jungle S: "Busy Earnin'"
Just an all around cool track and probably one of their biggest standouts from their self-titled.
67 A: FKA Twigs S: "Video Girl"
I love the fact that their can be two perceived meanings to this song. At first I thought it was a confrontation of a cheating boyfriend but the actual story is much more interesting. PS - don't worry! This is first of three songs, you'll definitely be seeing her later .
66 A: Sharon Van Etten S: "I Love You But I'm Lost"
Brilliant. One of the best things about Sharon (aside from her brutally honest songwriting) is the slight edge to her voice which I think is used perfectly for this song.
You could say its the best song on their album because it hits the hardest. Really great, smooth track and the Lorde-ness makes me love it even more!
64 A: Kiesza S: "Giant In My Heart"
"Hideaway" takes the award as the most overplayed song of the year although I do still kind of like it. "Giant" though is even better for me, I love the balance between the '90s house influence and the soul influence.
63 A: Sam Smith S: "Leave Your Lover"
One of my biggest hesitations with Sam Smith is that his vocals can border on whiny. I'm willing to look past that for this song which I felt was the best emotional moment of the album.
62 A: Mary J. Blige S: "Whole Damn Year"
I love the fact that Mary is still trying to change things up and experiment with different sounds. I liked her album but this song was my immediate favourite.
61 A: Beyoncé S: "Partition"
Very very sexy but I prefer the "Yoncé" portion to the latter half. I love the sounds of the paparazzi and the window rolling up so much though
Realized I need to finish by the 31st so I'm going to do 15 or 20 songs per day.
60 A: 2NE1 S: "멘붕 (CL Solo)"
One of my most important music-related resolutions is to get more and more into K-Pop (and J-Pop/Japanese music for that matter). I did hear 2NE1's album thanks to the hype from ATRL and I loved it SO much. It would have fit on my list had I not forgotten about it. CL's solo is one of my favourites for many reasons and I can't wait for her state-side stuff.
A super cute, super catchy song which combines little elements of classical with dance? Definitely has to be on my list.
58 A: Lorde S: "Ladder Song"
A stunning cover that ends the Mockingjay soundtrack perfectly. I love the emotional wavering in her voice which makes it feel even more vulnerable and dark.
57 A: Owen Pallett S: "I Am Not Afraid"
Similar in a way to "Rather Be" this song combines electronic with classical effortlessly and was my immediate favourite from his album.
56 A: TV On The Radio S: "Quartz"
THere's something about album openers - they (almost) always seem to be the strongest.
So much I love here!
I'm a Mother is one of the 3 songs I liked on the album.
Don't Tell Em grew on me so much recently. A jam.
Busy Earnin is one of my faves on the album.
Video Girl is her most traditional, structure wise but it's very solid.
Giant in my Heart is not my favorite Kiesza song
Partition is a future classic.
I decided to include her stuff because I wasn't able to put it on my 2013 list but I did place her album. The last one left is imo her second best song ever~
"Don't Tell 'Em" is my lowkey bop, love Perfume Genius/FKA twigs but admittedly not my favorite tracks from them, and I really need to get more into Sharon!!! Glad to see some Beyoncé representation, agree with what you said about Mary and I'm kind of iffy about Sam/Kiesza but "Leave Your Lover" is surprisingly hitting me right now.
Not familiar with the most recent batch but I like "Rather Be" and want to get into 2NE1 and k-pop more!!!
