All those voices... in the hook, towards the end in the "playbooouy" sections... they have not always sat right with me. I guess it's sort of like "Elevators" (hey, there we go) where little components that annoy Ainsworth and me try their best to overshadow a solid song, but "Red Velvet" is still pretty cool! It's consistent in its message warning against ostentatiousness and superficiality, and even almost an hour into Stankonia does nothing to dilute the strength of the album.
Choice lyrical nugget: "Had he not played it so flashy / Ashy when half of these ****** hurtin and workin / Would be he be found, found, found / In a hotel room, SHOT UP / With his dick shoved in something he got a lot of / Bill Gates don't dangle diamonds in the face / Of peasants when he Microsoft'n in the place / You gettin on my nerves, well I'm gettin on your case / Consider your surroundings or you leave without a trace"
The track is great. I hear what you're saying about little things getting in the way of the songs. Outkast gets in the way of their own tracks sometimes when they should let them breathe.
Also, staring at the cupcake is making me hungry...

Following on the heels of "Myintrotoletuknow" is something a LITTLE harder-edged and more violent than what we've since come to expect from the Kast yet still held down with a pretty funny refrain. The Organized Noize production that's given a shoutout towards the end of the track sounds slightly different from styles shown off on the record -– some new jack swing maybe? — but still it's easy to see where this lies in terms of the evolution of the OutKast sound. Oh and I'm not sure exactly how far along the line many of the songs on this album were recorded, but hearing them reminisce about the good old days while simultaneously talk about being in high school is totally endearing.
Kool_Aid_King is absolutely right in pointing out the iconicness of the hook (wasn't even a single hihi) and stating how the track works as a showcase "of just how cookie, wild, original and amazing they are."
Also I remember on the show Jake the American Dragon, he had a black lil girlfriend and god she must have said "ain't no thang but a chicken waaaaang" like 300 times over the time that that program was still on the air.
Choice lyrical nugget: "See I be busting caps like my amp be busting speakers / So how do you figure that Big Boi be scared to blast you / You 'posed to be quickest draw, but man, I hail 'em faster / 1-2-3, you need to think about the future / Before I shoot your ass and dilute your blood with lead"
Aquemini's 3rd song to drop and first in 20 () places, and hardly even seeing as this is a track that dates back to the 1993 recording of their debut album, "West Savannah" is a Big Boi solo and totally by its own design. He tells us all about his childhood and it's pretty cute! We also learn that he's a big Sade fan. The track serves as a little bit of a breather in sequence following that 7-song run of near-perfection leading up to it, but voters really didn't seem to find this a source of frustration. Few would likely pass this off as a discography highlight, but at the same time it is SUCH a hard song to dislike as reflected in our vote here. The off-kilter chorus "NOW NOW NOW NINE IN MY HAND, OUNCE IN MY CROTCH" is a total earworm and hearing Big be the narrator of his own story is something I'm glad we got to do even if it had to wait until the third album to happen.
Choice lyrical nugget: "February 1st, 1975 it happened / Was born in West Savannah way before I started rappin / My mamma had a ***** at the age of fifteen / My daddy was sellin that sack, now he's gots responsibilities / Stayed at me granny's while me mammy was at work / And she couldn't watch my every move so **** I started servin"
Not the most ideal circumstances but he tells it with such charm.
Can I also speak on just how much Big Boi has improved with time as a LYRICIST.
I always turned my head at those who would slot him as that "other" rapper in the group (the world's response to Hey Ya! vs. The Way You Move didn't help my case here) but while he never struggled with the flow, picking out these choice lyrical nuggets has made me realize that from a written standpoint, he and Andre were not always playing the same game.
And his word game now is just the tops.
I would say around the time Stank dropped, they were maybe equals.

WHAT THE **** NOOOOOOOO
I wish I gave this a 10 but giving it a 9.5 is really the same thing.
So I was getting all ready for you guys and I spent literally 40 minutes using thesauruses and everything typing up the description for #26 and then I lost all of it.
What we will do is a majority of the update tonight (I know it is late in the PM) then double it to get down the top 20 when I get off work mid-day tomorrow.
Then I promise the last two sets will go really quick.
