Lorde • Pure Heroine - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Lorde is cute. I actually really enjoy her as a person and treasure her as a musician. As a body of work, Pure Heroine isn't disappointing, but just kinda snoozy for me specifically. I've heard once that this album belongs as the last album on a Best Of review and I really couldn't agree more. I'm glad she came and low-key slayed the industry this year, it was quite nice.
J. Cole • Born Sinner
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This year I tried to get into conceptual rap albums, you see. Born Sinner was at the forefront of this attempt, and it didn't fall flat! It was an impressive comeback effort for Cole after being a moderate part of the rap game, it seemed to cement him and his abilities! It was also great to see some mainstream success with songs like Crooked Smile and Power Trip, Yeezus who?

Miley Cyrus • Bangerz - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Bangerz... among a lot of over-hyped pop girl albums, this one lived up to its' name. Moderately ghetto, an embarrassing tinge of "z" and, obviously, plenty of banger-anthems. The album is surprisingly raw and Miley in her newest rare form, and was quite an enjoyable experience. She did good. I just hope it doesn't bring an end to her being taken seriously, but the continuous ballad singles seem to be solving in that sector.
Drake • Nothing Was the Same - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I'm proud of Drake this year. His singles have all been on point leading up to this damn near flawless album. He succeeded incredibly with re-structuring his infamous brands that work so well: the "sad guy", the "YOLO" flow... it's all there. This is my favorite body of work from Drake, indeed. It's interesting to wonder what he'll be doing next.

Boards of Canada • Tomorrow's Harvest - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Though I've gotten into some Boards of Canada in previous years and didn't think much of it, this album changed my mind completely, and I enjoyed it rather thoroughly this year. The hopeless-sounding synth strings and apocalyptic, aching ambiance provides for great background music as well as falling-asleep playlist. Aside from that, it's just good music.
The Strokes • Comedown Machine - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - My friends, being the huge Strokes fans they are, sort of got me into them after a few years, and I tuned in fully to this release in the spring time. More than a few tracks clicked with me well, and I have a new-found liking for them because of it! Better late than never, I'd say. The somber nature of this album makes me feel like the probable tension that exists behind the music. I plan to venture into previous Strokes records in 2014.

The Knife • Shaking the Habitual - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I always love a good album from The Knife. It usually doesn't take a whole lot for me to enjoy their music, truthfully, but in all honesty I did not have the relationship with this album that I maybe should've! There's a lot of layers to it, but I'm now realizing the other dimensions I missed out on. The one I did get, though, was the music - which made up many of my very late nights in the early winter.
Fake Blood • Cells
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fake Blood has been a name in and around my life for nearly half a decade, and it was in 2011 that I first discovered some of his music. For y'all that don't know of him, he makes loud horn-based house music, appropriate for any party, night drive... some surprisingly great music. As for the necessity of the music, it's disputable, but it was a good part of my year

Paramore • Paramore
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Even if I kinda tossed this album in last second... ... it's actually been quite a big slice of my year. The first time I listened to it, I was so proud of Paramore. Surviving a huge band split and Hayley crossing over to Pop, this record is their most experimental and most successful effort yet, in my book. I'll never forget a night my friend and I bonded over this album. I love this record.
oOoOO • Without Your Love - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I've been following oOoOO since 2010, back when he was lost in the mix of witch house trends and what not. Finally releasing his debut this year, it was much less than disappointing. The album is very decently cohesive, impressively dark and quite smooth to listen to in many circumstances. I'm very happy that at least one decent witch house act survived the trend, it's great!

CHVRCHES •
The Bones of What You Believe - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - After hearing about them a little bit here and there, I checked out this release this year and was quite impressed! The type of music is right up my alley in terms of electronic music with Pop influences. I was also quite impressed by the amount of press and popularity CHVRCHES have been seeming to gain throughout the year. Hopefully they have a good career and make an even better sophomore album!
Natalia Kills • Trouble
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I've never really indulged into anything related to Natalia Kills until this year. I've always known about her and seen her from afar, sometimes checking a few things out and not really digging it. She strikes me as someone who bases their projects moderately upon what's already popular, which even if true, she does excellently. This album seemed to create its own unique sound in many ways, and I really respect her artistic expression embraced throughout it. A pretty solid underground pop record.

KT Tunstall •
Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I'll love anything KT does, having an affinity for mom-like alternative women and what not. Her 4th record to add to my collection, it was a rather nice addition to my summer. The soft desert-feeling jams are perfect for a hot day with a cold glass of lemonade and a hat big enough to cover your whole body (...maybe I'm taking notes from her album cover). The music videos are great, too. If you've tuned out from her since her career beginnings, you should check this out!
Gold Panda
• Half of Where You Live - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As a fan of smooth-flowing instrumental electronic music every now and then, (especially Gold Panda), this album couldn't have arrived at a better time! Just around June, I bonded with the album in the beginnings of the summer time, reminiscent of the warm nights and great times.

Last Year's #11 • Christina Aguilera - Lotus
Ke$ha • Warrior - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Well, this was technically released in 2012, but in December, so... whatever, it's fair It was #1 on my last year's chart And obviously I still had a very strong and important bond with it this year, since it should've SLAYED but it didn't so I just had it slay in my own life! It did come in at #92 on the year-end Hot 200 list for Billboard. Smash a bit, K$.
AlunaGeorge • Body Music - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I wasn't actually impressed the first time I heard an AlunaGeorge song. But shortly after I began listening to this album for the first time, my mind quickly changed. The mix of pop, R&B and electronic influences is quite possibly one of the most unique sonic combinations of the year, and one of the best developed brands. A great album by a great duo!

Last Year's #9 • Avril Lavigne - Let Go
Sky Ferreira • Night Time, My Time - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Just wow I never knew I'd be such a big fan of Sky's work as I have become this year. Beginning as a pop-aimed act, I'm very happy she did what she wanted to do and finally got an album released. I don't think I'm the only one in that sentiment! The rock-edge she adopted works very well, too. There isn't a song I don't want to scream along with.
Charli XCX • True Romance
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - One of the most impressive debuts of the year, this electronic-heavy take on pop by Miss XCX has definitely struck a chord with me. Emphasized by me seeing her live this spring, I really enjoy the cohesive record Charli put together. The thing about her is that anyone, with hard work, can do what she's done and I find that inspiring. She's a great artist and deserves everything she has and more.

Last Year's #7 • Leona Lewis - Glassheart
Skylar Grey • Don't Look Down
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This album rather took me by surprise this year. As Eminem's side gal, Skylar kind of has a weird place in the industry, but she's very talented and underrated. She put together a cohesive, weirdly-alternative record I identify with a lot, considering Skylar and I are both from Wisconsin. I see elements of it in her music and it became attached to me in some weird way. I bought this album the day it came out and it's come to mean quite a bit to me.
V V Brown • Samson & Delilah - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Before 2013, V V was on the map in a weird spot. British kinda-somebody with a sorta-worldwide-hit-but-not-really, Shark In the Water. She broke from the chains of the industry to create her own label and release this conceptual spirit trip. With a strange take on dark electronic music, this album could've gone both ways, but it definitely was not a disappointment. A great, underrated record.

Lady Gaga • ARTPOP - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Oh, how the mighty have fallen Kidding, but I'm one of those people that probably were a bigger fan of Gaga in their peak. However, ARTPOP definitely at least tied Born This Way in my book. She did try to create some type of concept album, and I do applaud her for that ( ) but I don't think that she succeeded the way she wanted to. However, had she stopped trying to explain herself so often and let the music talk, everything would be just fine. There are plenty of great bops from this album and I definitely love it.
Avril Lavigne • Avril Lavigne
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Definitely a seemingly better effort than Goodbye Lullaby, this album has been providing me with cheap anthems since April. It's sad to see #BeEpic screw it up so bad, but how it impacts ME is really what matters here I think Avril made a great album, excellent and clearly inspired by her newest experiences with Chad and what not. I can't not love Avril and will most likely enjoy her music forever, in its simplicity but cute jam factor. However, Hello Kitty is and will never be acceptable.

Must hear KT’s album. I like that one song from it. Warrior is not bad, but not really amazing either and I got tired of the singles. AlunaGeorge's music has a good mix and I like it. Must check more to see it's that good. Like Sky's music so must check her album. Same state as Skylar? Nice. I do like the songs I heard so far from her so must listen to it as soon as possible. VV Brown did fell off my radar and I do want her back in so must hear her album as well. Good comment about ARTPOP. Hush Hush is best song from Avril-the name of the self-titled album that is. Good job so far.

Second person I've seen give Skylar top 10 love here, and the more I see her on top 10s, the more I realize that maybe, JUST MAYBE, the album is clearly not "C'Mon Let Me Ride". I'm adding that to my "After the YECA" queue.

It's definitely NOT That song in itself was meant to be satirical but only sorta worked
