Halcyon - Ellie Goulding
Goulding's last album, 'Lights' was not only one of the best debut pop efforts of the last few years, but also my favorite album released last year. (seeing as how it was just released in the states last year and everything.) While 'Halcyon' in many ways is about the polar opposite to 'Lights' sonically, I love it almost just as much. 'Halcyon' has a very dark, gritty view on present day pop music. From the melancholy ballads that litter the album to the seemingly upbeat songs until you hear the lyrics, 'Halcyon' is the perfect album to play on a rainy day. Most pop stars wouldn't dare tackle some of the songs on the album which makes it unique and believable. "Only You" is... you just have to hear it to know. Think hip hop-esque beats that evolve to something out of a Passion Pit album for a breakdown. "My Blood" is gorgeous, an organic and giant ballad in which Ellie sounds the best I've ever heard from her. "Figure 8" is sweeping and features a dubstep breakdown that should sound overplayed by now but Ellie manages to make it fresh. It's in the top tier of "Songs that use dubstep" in 2012. "Explosions" and "I Know You Care" are the two ballads that will probably move you the most on the album. "Explosions" being a little more bombastic (given the title and everything) but it captures attention and emotion perfectly. "I Know You Care" can be so moving to the point of tears like that movies that is in the video. Overall, all of the tracks are great. Not every one is perfect or anything, but they all have their own very specific identities. We might not get more music from Ellie for a while since she takes her time on this stuff, but I am strangely ok with that. Probably because the quality of music that she has put out so far has been amazing. One thing I do know it that you won't listen to this album and walk away disappointed.
The Essential tracks: "My Blood", "Only You", "Figure 8", "I Know You Care", "Without Your Love"

I love Halcyon so much but I've yet to check out her other work. It would have been the perfect album had "Bittersweet" been on it.

Warrior - Ke$ha
Here you have it folks. My favorite album of the year and undoubtedly one of the best mainstream pop releases of the year came in the form of Ke$ha's second full length LP, 'Warrior'. It's just a really, really great pop record and there is no two ways about it. Ke$ha keeps her signature sound on the album, and yet manages to effortlessly up the ante by adding a hint of rock to many of the songs (Which she has dubbed "****-pop") to a stunning effect. The main offenders being the Iggy Pop-assisted "Dirty Love" and the mid tempo "Wonderland", which could easily fit on a country album, among others. Some of the best tracks have Ke$ha doing what she does best though, which is sing-rapping her way through a hot beat. "Crazy Kids" is one of the best songs on the record and it's a club banger, fit with a whistling chorus and a bass littered beat. While the standard edition of the album is good, I would have been far disappointed with it as a whole. The bonus tracks are filled with more personality and are just overall better songs than most of the regular album. "Last Goodbye" might not be only my favorite Ke$ha song ever but up there with one of the best, most melodic and dulcet songs I've ever heard. Gold Trans Am is full on ****-pop greatness, and "Out Alive" is a straight up electro pop banger that sounds like Calvin Harris could have headed the song. "Past Lives" is saved for last and it's gorgeous. The lyrics are engaging and the instrumental backing is beautiful. Overall, Ke$ha managed to craft an album that was not flawless, but it's flaws are what make 'Warrior' so special. I'm so glad that after the year wait she delivered.
The Essential tracks: "Crazy Kids", "Supernatural", "Last Goodbye", "Out Alive", "Past Lives"

Warrior Your countdown has been basically flaw-free.
We even had the same #1 album, like, YAS. Ellie's album also gave me extreme life
It has been a pleasure following your lists this year
Edit: allow me to stand by for the top 3

Diamonds - Rihanna
In the typical Rihanna fashion, she served up a pop song this year in September that was not only different then her usual but also one of the best pop songs of the year and completely unique in her discography. Diamonds isn't my favorite Rihanna song by any means, but it's a great pop gem (lol gem) there's no doubt about it. The song has an almost eerie yet engaging production and the chorus is uber catchy (also typical Rihanna fashion). Not really much else to say, other than the fact that this is Rih's last entry on the main chart.
2.
Lights - Ellie Goulding
I have been jamming to this song since I discovered Ellie in early 2011 lol. Like WHAT were the chances that this song would become one of the biggest hits of the year? For real it's so weird lol. But anyways, the song is indescribable imo. I don't know what to say about it other than it's perfect. It's unlike anything I've ever heard. Ellie is such an incredible artist and "Lights" showcases that so effortlessly. Let's hope she can get a follow up hit to this beast because I can't handle her being a one hit wonder.
1.
Starships - Nicki Minaj
yass bitches. Starships is 2012 in a nutshell in terms of music. If you were alive and in the real world in 2012 you knew this song. EVERYBODY knew this song whether they loved it or hated it. Nicki so ICONIC like that. "Starships" warmed up the frigid winter months it debuted in and was the ANTHEM of spring break (and summer, really) 2012. And that breakdown, wew lawd. On the other hand, this song also made a lot of people hate Nicki. But whatevs, BOW down to your number one, LOVE Nicki, BUY the Re-Up, and STAY mad at my flawless 2012 Best Of!
See you next year, *****!
