That's true, but those homologous structures are very different from comparable land mammals...
If an ancient mammal's bone structure evolved for aquatic living, the resulting bone formation would be very different (like whales and their ancestors)...In the case of mermaids and developing a bone structure that would survive such high pressures, I would think that the massive change needed would result in the organism no longer being humanoid...?
