Adele appeals to fans of indie music but her voice is what has enabled her to become more mainstream. Also, a song like RITD is commercially appealing, so I agree with you in saying that's what the other girls are lacking. It has hit written all over it. Even those that don't care for Adele recognise her talent. Duffy has a good voice too, but it's whiny and irritating. It's not made for the mass market, but she has her niche. The success of Back to Black inspired a new waive of talent, I think 21 will do the same.

I agree with all of this. I guess we agree with each other.
I think my point is, if these niche artists want to achieve comparable success to Adele's, then they would have to write and produce a song that will get urban listeners, AC listeners, pop listeners, alternative listeners, etc. out there to buy the album and support the singles. "Chasing Pavements" was a decent-sized success for Adele, but it fell right in the bowl with "Mercy," "Love Song" and other AC-targeted hits out there. I think "Rolling in the Deep" positioned Adele to be accepted again, unlike those songs by those artists. If anything, I think these artists will try to find their "Rolling in the Deep."

Exactly! The effect of RITD is going to rub off on the industry. Before its success artists like Adele would never have thought about having a multi-format smash, and because of that they wouldn't have tried to push for it. That's changed now. Whether the ambition comes from within, or whether they're pushed into it by their labels they will be exploring new ways to appeal to the mass market.

Katy Perry really could be a better artist if she had an indie/folky singer-songwriter vibe going on, but I understand why the commercial lane was chosen for her career path.

Right. Just listen to hear You're so Gay. It's Perfect.

Even though I find the lyrics appalling, sonically, it is one of her best works.

Katy Perry's **** are too big for her to be releasing music with substance. I don't think Linda, and others, take that into consideration when making these critiques on Katy's brainless pop tunes.
Adele also has bountiful breasts, but they are proportionate to her overall grandeur, and therefore she is respectable, capable of intelligent thought and able to make meaningful tunes.

So you can imagine Kelly singing the plastic Bag line? Well, I bet, she will change the line to something better.

I like the song coz its shady, when I heard that song, it was like a breath of fresh air. Not to mention, Madonna likes it.

It's a great point. Being overweight is something that Adele most definitely utilises to her advantage. I don't think she'd be taken as seriously if she had a figure like Katy's.

It's sorta true, right?
And I like that. I like people that play to their given body type/features. Sexy people should be sexy. Everyone else should be insightful. Some people can sort of straddle the line of being both, but it's generally impossible.

In which way?
-Album is a filler fest ✔
-Sales are reflective of that statement ✔
-Katy's popularity lies within the fact that she makes fun, generic pop tracks that will have zero impact in the long run ✔
????

Said the woman who wrote 'Beautiful' and allowed Aguilera (not Pink) to sing it. Quite right there Linda Perry. Stating the truth. But then there always have been pop songs lacking substance with no intention to change the world musically, ever since the birth of pop music.

I don't really get the hate with Katy. People are so pressed because of her unexpected success.

Well Katy's songs are enjoyable, but they have little to no substance and greatly lack variety. 90% of TD is composed of party songs...aka cash-ins..
No lies.

Body figure is completely irrelevant to what an artist records. Beyonce has big breasts and greater curves but she knows how to balance and take variety into consideration. A lot of her songs are of quality and substance. Don't blame us that Katy is purposely emphasizing her boobs in all the dresses she puts on.
And are you equating breast size with intelligence?

Not really, why does everyone think TD it's full of party songs?
Teenage Dream, Firework, Circle the Drain, The One That Got Away, E.T., Who Am I Living For, Pearl, Hummingbird Heartbeat and Not Like the Movies are definitely not party songs
She mostly write love songs, but the ones on black deal with other themes, like self empowerment, drug abuse, or self discovery
