The introduction track for Purple Rain (film and album) and his second US #1. This is a journey of a track, the church sermon introduction and the breakout into the jam session that is the song. It's pure energy and madness and who doesn't love it? The song twists and turns and solos it's way to your heart. That animal ending where he screams "Take me away". Goosebumps.

The song was already amazing and stunning etc., but it really took on a special meaning after he died. The de-elevator parts, the whole opening monologue in fact. Some people took solace in Purple Rain to remember him, but I think the irony of this describing his situation would not be lost on him. He would want to be remembered with this one I think.

Very catchy collaboration between Chic and Diana on this one, the whole album was. And a big global hit for her too when she was in dire need of one. Still not enough to qualify for her Superbowl performance though? What was up with that, D?

Loved this when I first heard it in Ace's rate and love it now (though it's no My Old Piano). Not quite enough for a 10 from me but 9 is impressive still. Good job Miss Ross. And well done on making Top 4.

What an iconic bop. That riff on the synth(?) is legendary alone but my god. It's just such a good track. I'm giving a very judgemental look and negative yelp review to anyone who did not hand this a rightful 10. Even Paul got this right girls. Lipps Inc may have been a one hit wonder, but what a hit! Poor those dudes that made Turning Japanese or w/e.

This song was actually 1 for a lot of voting but couldn't hold out through the final ballots I really think this would've been a great middle ground to win but alas...
