She was one of the biggest pop stars at the time in the U.S., which is relevant since I'm talking about reviews from critics here.
And Katy Perry? The point is critics have never felt compared to give good reviews to successful artists before. Nickelback had one of the most successful rock albums of the decade with "All the Right Reasons," and it was critically savaged.
And wasn't Avril kind of the "it" girl back in 2002?
