Newer definitely does not mean inferior. Remember, these are the songs that youngins will consider legendary 40 years from now.
I don't mean to say any newer song is automatically inferior; I gladly voted for "Crazy in Love" and "Hey Ya!" But I do think that some of the older tracks that lost (like "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Dreams" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") were at a disadvantage because of their age.
