It is worth remembering that there are two venues at the Junction; we almost ended up seeing some bloke called Terry who could not have been nearly as much fun as Marina. The first date of her tour brought humour, energy and perfect pop music to Cambridge. Starting the show with a beautiful stripped-down acoustic version of Radioactive, Marina’s happiness whilst performing was evident and contagious – a refreshing change from some too-cool-for-school indie bands who look like they would rather be anywhere else. She spoke in between songs of her joy to be back on stage, pulling her away from the trappings of the ‘dangerous cycle’ of watching excessive amounts Come Dine with Me. Tracks such as Homewrecker, Starring Role and Living Dead from her upcoming April album Electra Heart went down a storm with the adoring crowd. Primadonna was received especially well, being performed for very first time and with ‘massive hit’ written all over it. Striding across the stage, dancing and gesturing, Marina looked at ease and displayed none of the ‘nerves’ that she spoke about over performing new tracks. Favourites from Family Jewels such as I Am Not A Robot, Oh No! and Are You Satisfied? caused much hysteria. Moving over to the keyboard, Obsessions felt like a particularly special moment. The only slightly duff song was Jealousy, a song which Marina commented would only ever be released as a B-Side in a country far, far away… a criticism too harsh but displaying a critical nature which has certainly helped her in creating consistently brilliant music. Coming on for the encore to perform Fear and Loathing and finishing on Hollywood, during which she paraded around the stage with a toy fluffy pink dog (something I am almost certain the Terry-bloke wouldn’t have done), Marina brought an electrifying first show to an electrifying end.
