After all, she claims that's she's not in it for the money.

Why? Why is it impossible for Lady Gaga to make the statement? Why is it that the two are anything different? Lady Gaga isn't as much of a mask anymore as people seem to think it is. It's not like she's doing much different now than she would have wanted to do anyway - go listen to her song "Electric Kiss" from before she adopted her stage name. Does that not sound exactly like the message Lady Gaga tries to convey? She's not a different person. She's an exaggerated person - the over-the-top fashion
is her statement. It's her way of getting your attention focused on the message she already wanted to convey, and it's working.
Artistically I think she perhaps has even more potential with her stage name; the fact that people view her differently gives her almost an excuse to go over-the-top and crazy with any artistic statements she wishes to make. She doesn't have to be concerned about ending up as a dead-end flop with no shot at a career, because she already has the fanbase and following she needs to make her artistic statements noticed and to spread a message if she wishes, as well as support herself so that she may continue doing basically whatever she wants. Sure for a while she might stick with pop music and try to cling to the throne she currently holds, but eventually I think her label will stop caring about her being the top celebrity on Earth, even if she remains as such. I have a feeling she cares less about that than one might expect, given that she released BTW. BTW might not have been risky to some people, but it definitely was for a pop star who relies on public perception to sell and to earn money.
I think I kind of got off on a tangent there but whatever.
