They're so picky about who they support, and instead of bonding together for the same purpose, they break apart and fight each other.

As Peanut summarised, it's less effort to simply 'play the game', if anything speaking out for a small but modest group of people you are alienating a potential market; most commonly young, male teenagers who are quite happy to buy Katy Perry's music but not Gaga's because it is 'too gay'. Commercially, a gay supporter is going to struggle more then one that jumps onto the latest 'be who you really are' trend/s. By using lyrics that generalize enough to appeal to a mass market yet also attract the attention of the gay community (who feel that that artist is somehow supporting them), they build off of hype/buzz in the market at the moment in time increasing their sales and success: it must also be noted that hype requires a catalyst.

The whole system is corrupt and it is all controlled by sales and thus, profit; artists aren't what they used to be.
